Was One of the Six.
i Hiring tne speech ol Mr. Mendel
L. Smith at the memorial
j exercises here Saturday, the
i speaker told of an incident of
the war that happened in Cheraw.
Five soldiers and one
civilian were under arrest and
t held hy Northern soldiers at
' Cheraw. At the time there was
a Yankee soldier murdered near
Cheraw. In retaliation it was
determined that one of the
! prisoners should be executed.
' Six slips were put in a hat.
Five of hose slips were numbered;
the other was blank.
I The six prisoners were made to
| draw. The civilian drew the
j blank and was shot. Before he
! was shot he asked to go to see
; his wife and six children. This
was denied. Me asked that his
hands and feet he not tied; this
was granted; he also asked that
when they shot him they would
not shoot him in the face. This
also was granted. While Mr.
Smith was relating the incident
an old Confederate veteran, G. T.
Hyatt, arose in the audience and
said; "That's just like it happened,
for 1 was right there and
was one of the five soldiers."
The name of the man who was
executed was James Miller.
