Ing Inland H^^auon on the water highways of France is much more, important than one might suppose from the situation of the streams. A cehsns taken in' "1912 brought to light the fact that there were 15,141 boats of three tons and over, capable of carrying over 4,000,000 tons. As regards capacity, 78 per cent, can carry more than 300 tons; 13 per cent., 200 to to 300 tons; 5 per cent., 100 to 200 tons, and 4 per cent., 3 to 100 tons. Of the boats in use, 1,700 were of iron. These were encountered chiefly on the Seine, the canals of Fans and the Marne, and in the neighborhood of the Rhine. There is an interesting international phase of this humble, but by no means unimportant, branch of French navigation, due to the connection between the waterways of France and those of neighboring countries. Among the boats covered by the census 88 per cent, were JYench, 14 per cent, Belgian and 3 per cent. German. The Belgian boats, having an average capacity of 317 tons, are seen on almost all the waterways of the northern, eastern and central regions of France, but chiefly in the frontier departments. FAD HAS SOME DRAWBACKS "Engagement Tooth," That Threatens to Become Popular, May Not Be the Succom Looked For. Speaking of fads, there's that newest one in New York?the engagement tooth, you know. An engaged girl started it by having a mall diamond placed in a gold setting placed as a crown to one of her front teeth?all to be paid for by her prospective husband. By and by we may distinguish the engaged girl by her glittering tooth?and the married woman by two of the same, But it ia ruled that for each engagement and each marriage a tooth must be decorated, dentista will be overworked and some women won'i have teeth enough to go around? that ia, they won't unless there ia a falling off in the divorce line of activity. Of course the new idea if freakish. But it's worse. Because when you see a girl who has no diamonds in her smile you'll know at once that she never has been engaged. At present when finger ringf are used it ia easy for a girl to smik knowingly. But with the evidence tacked to her teeth every smile will be a revelation, won't it? TO THE FLOOR WALKER. "If his hair as red as ever?" she asked "Yes, quite," I answered. "Thank <Iod!" she exclaimed fervently jumped into her cab and drove away She didn't mean anything, she didn't care whether his hair was red, white or blue, hut that was Ellen Terry'? way of saying things, and I laughed as I walked up the street every tira? I France, a country rich in historical monuments, has enacted a law looking toward their preservation, It is decreed that an inventory of all historical monuments and buildings in France shall be taken durina ? next three yean, with the view ol discovering those in need of restoration. The law also decrees that private owners shall he held responsible for their upkeep. Under this law it will be no longer possible for any rich American to acquire the cathedral of Notre Dame, pull it down, and rebuild it in New York, Kalamazoo or Oshkosh for the purpose of attesting hit interest in history and art. . The words of Jesus are the greateel authority the believer has upon which to found his belief In the Second Com lng. Some refuse to have much to dc with this Important theme because oth ers have perverted it or else "overlj emphasized It" yet In the 260 chapter! ' In the New Testament there are 311 distinct references to this theme, a fai greater proportion than is placed upoc some of the doctrines upon which : whole denominations have been found ed. Relative Value. I. The exhortation to watch, w. 35 ' 40. This Is the beginning of a nev paragraph. Jesus has been showlni | the relative value of material posses i slons and the Kingdom of Ood an< I epitomizes his teaching In v. 34. Hi ; now Bets before his disciplines wha shall their attitude towards him durini j his absence (XL Pot 3:11, 12 R. V., Ti i tus 2:13; H. Tim. 4:8). Thus to b< watchful seems to contradict his Bug I gestions about anxiety. We need ti i remember, however, that the ohlli of the Kingdom is in entirely ne? relationship with the world. Hli desire is not for self enrichment bu rather to be in such relations with Go< as blB rights demand and thus to brlni to others their highest good. This pai able epitomizes opportunity. That which follows Is his ai i swer to that question but It Is also , continuance of the teaching just givei In this part Jesus refers to steward (bond-servants) that it Is their si ' preme business to seek the Klngdoi by selling In order to give. The on work of a servant Is to give to th members of an household, each In du season his portion of the father' bountiful grace. John 21:15-17: I. Pe 5:2; Jer. 3:15. Jesus teaches u that each bond-servant shall likewls be Judged and that suddenly. 111. The exhortation. Jesus Chrli . here presents to us the fact that w shall all be Judged. That the measui , of our reward or of our punishmer is dependent upon the measure of on > . knowledge and of our opportunlt; James 4:17. To him to whom muc , is given, of him shall much be r quired. Our present responsibility I that of being ready for the coming t the King and of his Kingdom. The e: pression of that readiness is evidence by our lives of service. There are t course many other phases of servlc not included in this parable, but on Lord is emphasising opportunity, ste^ ardship, service, watchfulness. In o der to fulfill our service wo must ent? The measure of on punishment is conditioned upon th measure of our knowledge (v. 48) an our knowledge can be enlarged as w use our opportunities. 1 IV. The Golden Text, (v. 37). ] > Intended to fix our attention upon th acts of our Lord when he shall retun j It seems astonishing that he shall con pel those whom he finds watching ( ' seat themselves that he may gird hln | self and serve them.
