Their charm is felt at once by our summer euests. Thev make the ten derest human touch in the land ecapes that draw the tourist to "Vacation land." For the dignity of their design, fofr their color and composition in the view, these irreplacable monuments of the simpler days deserve protection. Now, before it is too late, public sentiment should be bent upon their keeping. Private persons that have the means should follow the example set by the late Captain Baker of Wellfleet, who saved from decay or destruction a score of old houses scattered through that part of the cape he loved best. And the societies that have earned praise for their efforts in behalf of this and that historic house might well make a wide campaign in behalf of the seventeenth and eighteenth century house as a class. MISSING MONKEY RECOVERED Animal Carried Germa of Rare Disease Which Were of the Utmost Value to Scientist. "Woodrow," a monkey that holds the key to the solution of a rare and fatal disease, with which solution Dr. Harry Schmcisser of the pathological dcDartment of Johns Honkins hns A I pital would soon possibly have startled the medical world, has been missing from his cage in the Hunterian laboratory. : Doctor Schmeisser began experimenting with this strange disease, the identity of which he refuses to disclose, early in the year. The actual value of the monkey is a trifle, but to Doctor Schmeisser it is aimost priceless. He is almost sure his experiment had been successful, and that humanity would be benefited by the knowledge of one more dangerous disease, if "Woodrow" could be found. j The anxiety of the scientist over the missing subject was turned to jov when the simian was returned to the hospital by a man who had read an advertisement of its loss. WIDE AWAKE CENSOR. ^JWhile Abdul Hamid was still upon XllC throne of Turkey the president of the American Missionary college at Tarsus sent to Nes York for.a larire i "? " consignment of text books. In due time all except the chemistries came aafely. At first the president could not find out what was the matter, but .finally the commissioner of the port sent for him. j "Christian," he said sternly, "it is not for you to complain. It is for iyou to give thanks to Allah that you did not follow your diabolical books ;into the flames. Here is one copy ;that we saved for a witness. Not all of its deadly ciphers could we read, ibut this is plain, even to the eye of |a babe." Pointing to the symbol H. .20. he read with triumphant air and .voice, "Ilamid Second is Nothing!" 1 LONELY BACHELORS' CRY. From Graham island, olT British Columbia, bachelors there have jsent out a Macedonian cry for wives ;and threaten to leave their island jhome because of tlreir lonely lot. [From 50 to 100 pre-emptors about ;Masset have requested, that their >plight be made known. Numbers 1 to 50 in the matrimonial lottery are said to be without exception young and good looking.. All of them would make good husbands and announce themselves as anxious to hear from some good women. THE REASON. "Why are the mountain resort* considered aristocratic?" "Possibly because the mountains have crests." P08ITIVE ABOUT THAT. "Don't you think Miss Pounder has a great deal of musical ability?" "I don't know. I've never heard her play anything but the piano." / NOT A BIT. "She is about engaged to a struggling young chap." "He might as well give up quietly No use to struggle." The husy housewife stood by the window, ironing. A tramp approached the window. With fire in her eyes she said : "Are you the tramp who stole two of my pies from this window yesterday?" "NO," he replied. "It was a friend of mine, but he is very sorry that he stole them?he'6 dead." Being fleet of fool, the tramp was enabled to escape the flatiron which Nr-t seas hurled from the window In hia Mfeh sT RECOGNIZED WORK OF SATAN Nogro PrMChir Holcf^ Author of All Evil RaaponslbU for Aboonoo of Straw at Mooting. The negroes of the south are an emotional people, and this charac^ teristic is most plainly seen in their religious meetings, according to the New York Times. In such a state of excitement do they often work at this time that it has a hypnotic effect on the nerves, and many fall into a trance. On awakening they tell wonderful things about trips to the other world and of the sights they saw in spirit land. As many fall unconscious on the hard floor, it was the custom among the negroes at a place called Cray's I I 111 lllttMlllg HI [Mil Sirww UI1 11IC floor <leep enough to make a soft bedding. But one night the caretaker forgot to spread any. As a consequence the congregation renminbi unmoved, in spite of the preacher's terrible paintings of the horrors experienced by the tin repentant sinner, lie roared and ranted, but none of the sisters or brothers got up any excitement. They rocked backward and forward and filled the air with "Aniens," hut not a single one went into a trance. Glancing at the hard, hare floor, he at once understood the situation. "Brothers and sisters," he exclaimed, with teal's in his voice, "Satan sho'lv am amongst us tonight. There is forty souls lost here this evening fur want oh straw." ANTARCTIC COAL According to Prof. D. W. Edgeworth David of the University of Sydney, Australia, the deposits of coal discovered hy the Shackleton and Scott expeditions in the Antarctic will perhaps prove to he one of the largest unworked coal fields in the world. Wild of the Shackleton expedition discovered seven scams of coal outcropping in a great cliff of sandstone and shale. The thickness of these seains, inclusive of a few clay bands, was seven feet. Specimens chopped out by Wild with his ax b"ve been analyzed at Sydney and show the coal to lie of workable quality. Scott's geologists traced this field for a distance of 050 miles, extending northward from the head of Beard more glacier. ACCOUNTING FOR THINGS.
