And at Yorkville from Thursday, February 5, until Friday, February 20. All males between the ages of twenty-one and sixty years, except Confederate soldiers over the age of fifty years, are liable to a poll tax of $1.00, and all persons so liable are especially requested to give the numbers of their respective school districts in making their returns. BROADUS M. LOVE, County Auditor. i i. x. | ITEMS OF LOCAL INTEREST. M. M. Coltharp, a well known young man of the townshlp.-has taken a position in the clothing department of McElhaney*& Co. Report comes from Yorkville that the county chiangang has completed the "spur" road of the North and South .road from Allison Creek to Filbert. The road in said to be among the best in the county. Governor Blease on Thursday appointed Capt. A. M. Black, a well known citizen of Rock Hiil, as coroner of York county for the term provided by law to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the incumbent. L. W. Louthian. Friday was a dull day for the merchants of Fort Mill. There were few people on the streets, owing to the almost steady fall of rain throughout the day. Business was just a little bit poorer than it has been any day this year. Representative Finley has introduced in Congress a ioint resolution anpropriatintr $50,000 to begin with, for the printing of flip nnmnlofo rncfor r\f fV\o and enlisted men of the Union and Confederate armies. the eompilation of which was directed hv th<* act of February 25. 1903. The special five-reel show nut. on Friday evening hv tho Majestic Theatre was enjoyed hv a large number of peonle. The management of the Ma jest ie is giving Fort Mill all that cou'd he desired in the wav of movies and the ""show is being liberally patronized. A marriage of much interest to the people of this city was that at Hickory. N. C.. last Thursday of Miss Annie Moore Link and Mr. Robert Sinclair Booth. Miss Link is a sister of Mr. C. S. Link, of Fort Mill, and has a large number of friends in this section. She was formerly the teacher of music in the Fort Mill graded school. Mr. L. L. Downs, of Pineville, is said to have received information from Washington City of his appointment as postmaster at Pineville, to succeed the incumbent, Mr. White. Mr. Downs has had much experience in handling mail, having served as carrier on one of the Pineville rural routes for several years, and doubtless he will give entire satisfaction to the patrons of the Pineville office. He is a brother of Mrs. C. W. Eason, of this city. At a special meeting of the directors of the First National Bank held the last week a resolution was adopted accepting the terms and conditions of the Federal Reserve Act, which makes the bank a member of the new banking system. The new banking system is a "bank of banks" with one fundamental idea which will manifest itself in the form of the regional bank note. The officers of the First National Bank were asked to express their choice of the location of the regional bank for the South and decided in favor of Charlotte. People in this section interested in the fruit crop have been much disturbed for several weeks on account of the very warm weather, which has caused peach trees, fig bushes and many varieties of berries to display signs of budding.* The greater part of the last week was more like June than February, and when the cold rain set in Thursday night owners of orchards breathed a sigh of relief. It is believed that the cool spell of this week will retard the fruit sufficiently to cause it to miss a killing frost. The Fort Mill Township Sunday School association, a branch of the York county association, was formed at the local Methodist church last Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by the election of the following officers: President, W. M. Carothers; vice president, S. L. Meacham; secretary, J. N. Atwater; supt. adult department, J. H. McMurray; supt. home department, J. T. Garrison; supt. elementary department, Mrs. S. L. Meacham. This board of officers will at once take up the work of completing the organization of the association in the township. Present at the meeting Sunday j was Dr. J. E. Walmsley, of j Winthrop, president of the York TJounty Sunday School association. Dr. Walmsley presided over the meeting and explained in detail the intent and aims of such an organization. Mr. J. T. Fain, secretary of' the county association, also was present and made a highly interesting talk of the accomplishments of the association and pointed out in detail the several different phases of the work that confronts the local organization. I The purpose of the Sunday School association, which is interdenominational, is to stimulate ! interest in the schools and to increase the membership and ati tendance. It is needless, perhaps, to say that under the direction of the above set of officers the local association will in the near future rank with the leading associations forming the county organization.
