Pick Out a Good Boy and Keep Him ?$% ' ' f!:' V for * Master, and Always Be If you nre a clog of aiiy sense, you trill pick out a pretty good sort of a boy and stick to hint, says Don \ % Marquis in the American Magazine. These dogs that are always adopting one boy after another get a bad name among the humans in the end. And you'd better keep in with the humans, esjuvially the grown-up ones. What a dog want a is a boy anywhere from about nine to al>out sixteen veara old. A boy under nine hasn't enough sense, as a rule, to be any company Xor an intelligent d(f?. And along about sixteen they begin to dress up and try to run with the girls, and earn- on in a way to make a dog tired. There are exceptions, of course?one of the worst mistakes some"dogs make is to suppose that, all hovs are alike. That isn't true; you'll find just as much individuality among hovs as there is among us dogs, if you're patient enough to look for it and have n knack for making friends with animals. But you must remember to Ik? kind to a boy if you're going to teach him anything; and you must be careful not to frighten him. FIND TIME'S CHANGE COSTLY Frugal French Mind Disgruntled Over Extra Money That Must Be Spent for Electric Light. Some months ago France changed its time meridian front that of Paris to that of Greenwich. ITp to that time France alone had stood out against, using the international system. They are just finding out that this change is going to cost them something. Tt happens in this way: The new time is ten minutes slower than the old. In a store, for & instance, that closes at six o'clock it is now necessary to use the electric lights ten minutes 'longer after ?. lighting up than before, since the lights are turned on when it is dark V enough to need theni, but the store is really kept open ten minutes longer than last year. The frugal French mind figures # out that this extra expense will he one per cent.; that is not very much, but they count the pennies over i carefully in France. <4 " ' 8UGAR FOR BRAIN WORKERS. Thaw, who escaped from Matteawan asylum five months ago and who has since been held a prisoner at Concord, N. H., i Monday began planning for visiting friends within that State. Thaw said that i f the court should admit him to bail he would not. leave New Hampshire for the present. Since his detention there he has made many acquaintances. Thaw planned, he said, to make his first visit at t he home of one of his custodians, Sheriff Holman P. Drew, at BerI lin. Drew arrested Thaw near i Coiebrook after his deportation from Canada. After the . lawyers have had sufficient time to study the report of the commission United Stales Judge Edgar Aldrich will give another hearing on Thaw's | petition for admission to bail. Undesirable Shows. It seems to us that Edgefield ought to have had enough experience with carnivals to prove to our people that they are very undesirable attractions. That being the case, the time has i come when the city fathers slH&uld refuse to let them show in the town. There is very little amusement in them, and nothing instructive or elevating. On the contrary, they are menaces to the young, being more like schools of bad license than anything else. The greater portion of the attractions are simply gambling devices and games of chance. Instead of awakening elevating feelings, they teach the contrary. It is to be hoped that the town government will look at this matter in its true light, and if it has at heart the real welfare of our people, especially the young, it will close its gates in the future to all such ittractions.
