NATTERS OF LOCAL INTEREST.
Price of Cotton.
The best price paid for cotton on the
local market yesterday was 13$ cents.
Seed sold for 45 cents.
Gins Running Slack.
The bulk of the cotton in this
section seems to have been
gathered and fanned. There
has been such a dropping off in
the cotton brought in that the
local gin is now running but one
day in each week. This is quite
unusual for the season, we are
told, as heretofore the gins have
at this time been fairly busy.
The rapid harvest of cotton probably
is due to the early opening
and the good price at which the
staple has been sold.
Little Cotton in Field*.
Ti e season so far has been an
ideal one for the harvest and the
farmers of . this section have
made good use of it. Our farmers
have not only been blessed
with good crops and fine weather
for the harvest, but the small
grain crop . .gives promise of
beir.": as good as any grown
hereabouts in a number of years.
A leading farmer of the township
says that more small grain
has been so.vn in this section
this fall than lie has ever known,
due probably to. the fact that the
Western corn crop was short
this year and the farmers are
anticipating high-priced corn
next spring anq summer.
Pineviile Boy Loses Finger.
Report reached Fort Mill
Saturday of an accident at Pineville
in which the young son of
J. K. Cook, a business man of
the town, suffered the loss of his
left thumb. The young man
had arranged to take a hunt and
luid his loaded gun standing bebeside
him with the stock resting
on his foot and his left hand
over the top of the barrels. His
dog was in high glee over the
prospect of the hunt and reared
upon his master. The dog's foot
struck one of the triggers of the
gun causing it to discharge and
the young man's left thumb was
torn from his hand. The load of
shot barely missed the young
man's head.
Election of Trustees.
Along with the municipal election
to be held in Fort Mill on
the second Tuesday in January,
i I to. I 1.1 _ 1 !_ |
trie iotii, tnere aiso is to uc an
election for three members of the
board of trustees for the local
graded school. The election for
trustees will be conducted by the
managers of the municipal election.
but the trustees' votes will
be deposited in a separate box,
and any voter of the 28ih school
district will be entitled to vote
for the trustees. Up to the
present time no one has formally
announced himself a candidate
for trustee, though the names of
several citizens have been prominently
mentioned for the places.
To The Voters of Fort Mill.
In response to the solicitation of n
number of friends, and also for the
reason that I feel that I can til 1 the
office acceptably to n majority of the
Eeople of the town, I have decided t<
ecome a candidate for mayor of Fori
Mill in the election to be held on
January 13, 1914. 1 wish to impress
upon the voters of the town, however,
that I am not running for the oflice as
a matter of personal opposition to any
other candidate. If I did not feel that
I could better aid in the upbuilding of
the place as mayor than I can as a private
citizen I would not be in the race.
To those who have lived in Fort Mill
for a number of years I think 1 can
point to the two terms I served as intendant
of the town several years age
with the assurance that if my administration
were not the most progressive
the town has had for a long
time they certainly wore not the leas!
progressive. I did what I could tc
further the interests of the town in
every legitimate way, and if there wer?
law violations they occurred neithei
with my consent nor connivance. Then
as now, 1 believed in and stood for tht
enforcement of every law upon out
statute hooks, without knowing an)
one in their enforcement. I have alsc
represented my wan! in the towr
council a number of years and it haf
been my policy in that connection alsc
to do what I could to make Fort Mill f
better town to live in. I have stooc
for, and now stand for. whatevei
promises material aid to the com
munity, as I think my record as ai
official and citizen of the community
for the last 14 years will prove.
In the coming election, as in th<
other town elections held in Fort Mill
there are no serious issues to divide ou
people, but it seems to me that i
should be the purpose of the voters t<
secure a man for mayor who will at
tend to the business of the town on an;
and all occasions. This I promise to d!
if I am elected. I seldom find it neces
sary to be away from my place o
business on Main street and if I an
honored with election I shall conaide
it my duty as it will be my pleasure t
Kive car at a!! tlir.Cj mr* of rrr
cern to the office. I shall appreciat
the votes of my fellow-citizens.
