The Charlotte Observer of Tuesday
morning handed a big bouquet to the
detective force of its city for the capture
of a "boss cocaine-seller of Charlotte,"
when, as a matter of fact, the
bouquet rightfully belonged to the police
of Fort Mill, without whose assistance
the "boss cocaine-seller" in
all probability would have continued
for a time to furnish the "sniff goods
to dealers in Fort Mill and other towns
adjacent to Charlotte. The capture of
the Charlotte wholesaler of cocaine
was effected in this manner: Abe Horn,
a negro, returned to Fort Mill Saturday
afternoon from Chnrlotte with a goodly
supply of the drug and was nabbed by
Policeman Coltharp. When questioned
as to his source of supply Horn readily
informed the officer that the atuff had
been bought from a negro veterinary
of Charlotte, whose name Horn also
gave. A fine of $50 was imposed upon
Horn, but this was reduced upon condition
that the negro would act a*
"decov" between the officers and th<
Charlotte dealer. This Horn agreed tc
do and he was accompanied to Charlotte
by Chief Colthurp Monday afternoon.
The plnn which the Fort Mill
officer had laid out to capture th?
cocaine dealer was explained to th<
Charlotte "detectives," the trap set,
and the "boss cocaine-seller" without
hesitation walked into the trap.
Yes, it was easy for the Charlotte
"detectives" to "Let's get 'um," at
The Observer said, after the Fort Mil
officer had mapped out the plan un<!
furnished the go-between.
The Fall Trade.
With the beginning of the fall trad*
peeping out, our business men should
sit up and take notice. There is nc
use expecting the residents of this
section to go around with a microscope
trying to find out whether this
or that is sold in our town. The only
plan that will work is to keep everlastingly
telling them what you havi
on hand. That is the way the up-todate
merchants get their trade. The.t
iB no reason why the people of th s
vicinity should be expected to adoj t
any different method in regard c
trading than at other places. Tell them
what you have; let them know whHt it
costs, show them you cun save them
time and money by buying from you,
and then they will come to your st? r
and not carry home mail order catalogs,
There are hundreds yes thousands?of
people within a short distance
of town who scarcely suspect what
there is for sale in your store. L-1
them know where you are. Invite
them to your store. Tell them about
your bargains. Show them that you
want their trade just as much as it is
wanted by out-of-town merchants and
a little more, by the way?and they
will begin coming to you. But if you
it and expect them to hunt you up,
you are going to be very sadly disappointed.
It costs more to keep goods
a year before selling them and they
get shop worn and out ol style. You
can't get business without nsking for
it and the best way to ask is by attractive
advertising.
The TimeH welcomes the York News
to its list of county exchanges. The
News made its appearance Thursday
and henceforth will appear twice a
week. The paper is a seven-column
eight page sheet, is well printed and
carries u substantial amount of well
displayed advertising. We trust that
the publisher, Mr. W. A. Fair, will
find the publication of his paper both
pleasant and profitable.
A citizen of Fort Mill says the Rock
Hill business men are an easy lot; that
Rock Hill and Yorkville fought over
the court house, ami that now, when
Yorkville needs some money to launch
a newspaper and app* als to Rock Hill
for aid, the Rockhillians fall to in
grand style.
Nope, we didn't sell any fall delivery
cotton at 11 cents, but have
found it convenient several timeii
recently to hand out a consoling word
to the fellow who did.
York, with six good newspapers, is
getting to be some county.
Misquoted the Governor.
The Times has received from John
K. Aull, secretary to Governor Blease
the following note, which is self explanatory:
Columbia, Sept. 26.
"Editor Fort Mill Times,
"Fort Mili, S. C.
"1 desire to call your attention to an
i error in the news columns of your issue
of September 25, in the article headed,
'Will Defeat Ed Smith By 20,000, Says
Blease.' Your article states that
Governor Blease said 'the appointment
of F. H. Weston of Richland as district
attorney was to show indirectly
that the administration would favor the
j reflection of Senator Smith, who goes
before the voters of South Carolina in I
the nrimarv ne*t Ancrint 9 Aa moffor !
of fact, this statement was not made
by the Governor, but was contained in
the news dispatches from Washington,
1 published in the morning dailies of
Sunduy morning, and in his interview
the Governor was commenting upon
. this statement, saying that it was
. proof of the charge which he had made
that the administration was seeking
to hurt him politically, but that the
people of South Carolina had never
stood for and would never stand for
dictation from a Federal administration,
or anybody else, as to whom they
should elect to office.
"Jno. K. Aull, Secretary."
I The Times regrets that the Governor
was incorrectly quoted, and that no
; wrong impressions may be created by
the former quotation, it is with pleasure
this paper prints the abrve note
front Mr. Aull.
