to a nuinbi^of requests ifer the pub-1
lication of his annual forecast of the I
first killing frost of the fall, makes the '
prediction for the frost this year
to occur during the seven-day period
t f which October 23 is the central date.
Temperatures the latter part of Sep- '
tember* wiW be low, he says, with
September 24 as the central date. It
is quite probable, in his oninion, that
light frosts will occur before October'
1. These forecasts for frost include,
the section north of the 34th parallel.
"It is indicated that two snows at
least will occur during the winter east;
and south of the Illue Ridge. It is not
probable that snow will occur before
th?' winter solstiCe, December 20.
"A forecast of winter temperature
and precipitation will be possible after
Octoper 1. Indications, however, are
that lower temperatures than last winter
are more than probable.? The

Winthrop s tine tattle.
One of the best herds of dairy and |
beef cattle in the Southeast is the one |
owned by the Winthrop College, Rock i
Hill, South Carolina.
From this herd the college, with its
S(K) studenas in the winter and -KM) in j
summer, are supplied with milk and;
butti r, and the farm also produces;
more than 200 beeves which are used ,
at the school.
The dairy itself is a model. The
superintendent each day makes a re- j
port to the president of the college on
the output.? Southern Field.
"Panama on Wheels."
One of the most unique methods to
arouse interest in the approaching com- |
pletion of the Panama canal, and the ^
immense trade expansion that will |
follow the canal's opening, especially
in the South, has been launched by the ;
Mobile, Ala., chamber of commerce
and business league.
This is a "Panama Canal on Wheels,"
which is now touring the 10 Southern
States for the next few weeks before
the Mobile convention of the Southern
Commercial congress, to be held in the
Alabama city October 27-29, at which
President Wilson, Secrstary Darnels,
Secretary Bryan and scores of prominent
congressmen and citizens will deliver
addresses.
The "Panama Canal on Wheels" consists
of a special car containing a complete
working model of the Panama
canal.
Remembered Former Slaves.
William Reilly, president of the
Luziannc coffee company, went to his
country estate at Monroe, near New
Orleans, a few days ago and notified
all the former slaves of his father and
their descendents to assemble at a
cabin which had been given to one of
the old slaves by his former master.
When the thirty negroes had gathered
Mr. Iteilly nearly took their breath
away with this statement:
"I am going to try to put you in the
way of living independently and prosperously.
1 have a plantation here and
I am going to make you an offer. I am j
going to cut it up into farms, build
each of you a good house, stock each
farm and let you run it yourself, but
on one condition that you must all
agree to. You must not buy anything
on credit. 1 have arranged with a ,
bank to give each of you what you j
need, and you must let me know how j
much that will be each month. Understand,
this is only on condition that you
ask credit of no one."
The plantation to be divided is one of ;
the finest in Louisiana.
