THURSDAY. APRIL 17. 1913.
With the approach of spring is
time to begin to plan and think
for a year of work for better
roads about the country districts.
While great progress has been
made in the direction of street
improvement and in main arteries
of highway travel from town
to town, the general improvement
of country roads proceeds
at a very slow rate. One great
reason therefor is the temporary
character of so much of the
work. The road officials are too
anxious to make a record that
seems economical for the time
being. It is cheaper for this
year to scrape a lot of mud out of
the gutters than to cart or
gravel and dig out the gutters so
as to drain off the water. Slipshod
repairs are very costly in
the long run. They place i
permanent tax on all is ho have
produce to get to market. They
give the country district a black !
eye with a great host of the pub
lie that are traveling by automoL

one. Tney discourage me nome
seekers that may he thinking
of locatirg. The proper rare of
water along: the highways is on?
of the secrets of permanent
work. A road with ample gutters
built with enouuM sloj e
so that the water will run o'V'
will last many years while at
imperfectly drained road g'>?s f. i
pieces in a hard shower or under |
the storms and frost of winter.
'J'he time has come when un-1
scientific, patching: of country
roads ought to c as<. i he farmer

more than the pleasure driving
mitori'ohilists. To the latter a
had toad means simply a little
discomfort. To the inrmcr it
means many lours of time
wasted wl ill he draws his loads:
through the sloughs of mud. It
means tl at he n ust keep more
hordes and that liis U arts of J
burden will wear out (picker.!
Let every farmer insist that the'
road officials of his neighborhood
do modern, scientific work.
William Rockefeller is really
an object of pity. Wit li all Liu

in the grip of sickness that allows
him little rest. His wealth
has become a burden to him. Hej

knows lit tie about the actual conduct
of his vast interests and yet
he is followed by investigators
to remote corners and questioned.
Uneasy rests the head that'
wears the Rockefeller crown. I
How gladly would he give a
chest of giittern g gold if once,
more he could know 'he delight
of being a little rnvgedcoated
