THURSDAY. APRIL 3. 1913.
If everybody could be impressed
with the importance of
entering an early and vigorous
campaign for the extermination
of the house fly, a great menace
to the health of every community
would be removed, for such a
war undoubtedly would succeed
in its purpose. It no doubt would
be a comparatively easy matter
to rid the country of the pest if
everybody would make war on
it at the opening of the season,
when the first ones make their
appearance. This cannot be expected,
however, and since it is
not probable that the country
will ever be entirely rid of the
fly, the next best thing is to
guard against its intrusion by
the scrupulous cleanliness about
the premises and screening of
tne windows and doors of residences
and business houses. In
some communities the people, in
addition to screening their houses
use fly traps, which are placed
on porches or near doors on the
outside of the house. A serviceable
and cheap trap is one made
of common screen wire, such as
is used for door and window
screens. In those places where
screens and fly traps have been
in general use, the small number
of flies has become so obvious,
it is said, that the plan can well
be recommended to every community.

Eat Neat.
No man who lives on meat was
ever known to lick his wife or
ask for a divorce, says an exchange.
Adam got into a row
right off because he had no hog
meat, butter or black bass. Napoleon
lost Waterloo because the
allied forces had bacon for breakfast
the morning of the fight.
The French had vegetable soup.
No war can be successfully waged
without hog meat.
Americans are the most frisky
people on earth because they
eat the most hog meat.
A vegetable diet woman is as
cold and clammy and unlovable
as a turnip. If you wish to put
roses in the cheeks of your girls,
vitality in their every motion,
and brains in their heads, feed
them meat.
If you want your boy to get a
job and hold it, go to the front,
and amount to something, give
him bacon grease, ham fat or

The world is full of cranks
who are always getting up some
new fad about hay soup or corn j
fodder tea.
Normal Frost Season Is Passed.
The average date on which the t
last killing frost in Spring oc- \
curs in this section, according to r
the Charlotte Observer, is now >
passed. The date is March 30, (
and with the passing of that day ?
ends the period of four-tenths of
the year during which killing j
frost has occurred in the past. J
The forecaster would not state
that no more killing frosts or
freezes would occur this Spring,
but ventured the Statement that
comparatively mild weather prevails
again over the country.
The first freeze in Autumn of
1912 occurred on November 3,
two days later than the average,

this Spring, the date of the last

During this frost period of 140

period has seemed to be a
very mild one, it has been but

when viewed from the
standpoint of days with freezing
weather, as the number totals

in the same period there were
