PRICE COTTON PICKER HAS PROVED A SUCCESS Theo. H. Price, of New York, has been demonstrating his cotton-picking machine in Robeson county, N. C., and that the machine has proven a success is no longer doubted. During the demonstrations Mr. Price selected 25 rows of cottop, which represented one acre, and ran the picker over six rows twice. The second picking yielded only ten pounds of seed cotton to the six rows. nf fnnrcp Sf.mp cotton was Vi VVU? WVJ left on the ground, but the quantity was very inappreciable. A negro man and his children were put to work picking the loose cotton from t he ground and only four pounds were thus gathered. A portion of this had fallen from stalks on the adjoining rows on either side. The field in which the demo- station was given was good average cotton and will make a bale to the acre, hence thesli; h per cent, of the cotton wasted is I seen to be inconsiderable. These I careful t ?sts were made to meet I the criticism that the machine j wasted a great deal of cotton g and left some on the stalk. As yet the machines are, in I price, out of reach of the small J farmer though the farmer on a I large scale can easily make it | pay for itself in a short time, as ? it costs only twelve cents a I hundred to pick with it whereas g you now pay fifty cents to $1 u ? hundred, and a great many times I are unable to get it picked at all, j| no Irttino- it pnfirplv rf U'UO iwunig ?v v??.. . The machine is a mammoth j| one weighing more than two 9 tons, and has a horse pewer from I thirty-five to thirty-eight. With j I all its size and weight it is I thoroughly adapted to working || in almost any kind of soil but, of course, works better in the more level sections than where it is extremely hilly. The price of $5,000 is considered reasonable when its accomplishments are considered, although perhaps when they come into more general use they can and will be i materially reduced. (Advertisement.)
