That the race next fall for governor of South Carolina will be fought out between the two ( men, Cole L. Blease and Ira. B. Sones, is the opinion now ex-, pressed by men throughout the State who claim to keep in touch with things political. For a time i there was a belief in some quarters that Major Jno. G. Richards of Kershaw would be in the race, but not so. Mr. Richards has . announced himself a candidate for State railroad commissioner, and this announcement, we take it, means that the field will be i open to Governor Blease and Mr. < Jones. The winner in such a ] race would not be near so difficult ( to name in advance as with a j half dozen or more in the run- j ning. However, we are not yet ( ready to divulge the secret. t Macon, Georgia, is going right i ahead in making arrangements s for the annual reunion tot>e held ' there this year May 7-8-9. Some 1 idea of the manner in which 1 Macon expects to entertain the old vets may be had from the published statement a few days ago that the city had already ( raised $50,000 for entertainment 1 purposes. The number of old 1 soldiers attending the Macon re- c union doubtless will be larger f than that of any former reunion, for the Georgia city is located in the heart of the South and many ^ of the veterans who, physically as well as financially, would l>o p unable to attend the reunion a were it held out West will go to ai Macvn this year. ol , fa If ail the tow nships throughout pi the cotton belt w ere as thorough-1 h ly organised in the matter of cotton reduction as Fort Mill ap- [ \vars to be. there would he little n?WS,Mt\ of solution OUt tKHVStorS. Yorkville has a delegation in Columbia asking the legislature to pass a special act allowing the county to spend $75,000 for a new court house. Rock Hill is kicking. Hold up, Rock Hill; don't be too greedy. Some yearj ago one of your orators spoke all the way on the train from Charleston to Rock Hill, his theme being, "Yorkville has the court house, jail and poor house and Rock Hill everything else in the county." Give the county seat a chance. ? Lancaster News. The indications are that the legislature will pass an anticigarette law for South Carolina. Several States of the Union have such laws and in the main they are enforced. In Tennessee there is a law prohibiting the sale of cigarettes and it is regarded as a good law, having reduced cigarette smoking among the boys. The man who is addicted to the habit orders his cigarettes as he does his liquor. In some of the larger towns of Tennessee cigarettes are sold in violation of the law, but in the rural districts and smaller towns a "ready made" cigarette is hard to find.?Spartanburg Herald. Now, brother farmer, this is something of preat importance. Will you do it? Be sure you are right then go ahead, and I am with you to the finish. But remember, when we had the Alliance we got up a resolution to curtail 10 per cent, in acieage. I believe everybody agreed to it, and one farmer said as he was going home from a meeting: "Boys, everybody is going to cut and there won't be any cotton raised and cotton is going to be a big price. I am going to plant all I can and make it all next fall." He did, and so did his neighbors. We got less for our cotton than ever, and so it will be again, without a forfeit. One brother said, "We have got more sense than that now." I hope so, but am afraid we haven't. Now brother, j you should install in your reso- i iution a forfeit of say $25 that you will not plant more than 10j acres to the horse, and if you I break the resolution let the | money be paid and go toward the: expenses of the order. If you \ i are not willing to sign a forfeit i pledge, then you might as well say that you are not going to live up to your pledge. I don't say we won't stick, but, brother, we j have made so many failures that j j the business world says, "If the j , farmers do agree to cut they won't do it, and we will get the cotton as cheap as ever.'' I have had them to tell me we would not stick together. So far we j have not, but I hope the time is J near at hand when we will get > together and make a reasonable profit on everything we do. 11 don't believe anything short^of: an iron-clad resolution will do us any good. The resolution should be good for not less than five years, and ten would be better. Then we would know what was back of our plans. Now, brother farmer, if you have a better plan, let us hear from you. J. P. STROUP. Pineville, N. C., Jan. 30. Newsy Notes From Gold Hill. Correspondence Fort Mill Til les.
