TIME?The event described belongs to :he last years of the exile, B. C. 529, *hen Babylon was taken by Cyrus and lis generala 1 The decree of return, and the first re- ! :urn, occurred a year or two later. PLACE?Babylon the capital, enlarged, >eautifled and fortified by Nebuchadnextar. Under the great Nebuchadnezxar | i Jabylon rose In grandeur, power and i ixtent, till it became the most magnificent ?nd beautiful city of antllulty. In those days Babylon web the i netropolis of the world, the center of i :ommerce, art and wisdom. The i wealth of the world poured into Its 1 :offers. Babylon was the strongest I i ortress in all the world. Belshazzar was the acting king of Babylon at the < lme of this lesson, while his father i ^abonldus was the nominal and legal i ting who lived and warred outside ot t he city. Cyrus had been advancing toward Babylon. He gained a decisive victory I >ver Nabonldus, on his way to the i capital, and his army entered the city 1 without fighting, and peace was proclaimed. A portion of the city, probibly the citadel Including the royal ! palace, held out for some time, being ' pccupied by the army of Belshazzar 1 is a rallying place. Two or three , weeks later Cyrus made his triumphal j jntry Into the city. Seven days later, ; Che general of Cyrus stormed that part of Babylon which had held out , igainst his army, and on that night Belshazzar was slain. It was during Chls week that Belshazzer made a magnificent banquet to encourage his fenerals and princes In their struggle with the Medo-Perslan foe. At his feast, therefore, Belshazz&r lought to remind his warriors of th'' >ld campaigns their forefathers had taught. He had In his possession the xeasures which these forefathers had carried from Jerusalem when they conquered Israel and, as it seemed to .hem, Israe/s Jehovah. His conduct chus was not merely that of a drunken debauchee, but partly of a cool politician, when amid the applause of i thousand courtiers and army commanders he ordered the sacred ves?els of the Temple of Jerusalem to be Prought Into the hall of feasting. Such i scene would fill the hearts of the wlne-lnflamed warriors and nobles to cverflowlng with daring, and also prlng a worthy occasion for the divine Interference to encourage his people on the eve of their deliver- ' uice. In the m>dst of the carousal, the ting saw the fingers of a man's hand writing strange words, "letters of fate ind characters of fear," on the wall j n the full Maze of the candlestick, 1 perhaps the great go'den candlestick :aken from the temple. There Is something blood-curdling In the risibility of but a part of the hand and ts busy writing. No wonder If the iotous mirth was frozon Into awe md the wine lost flavor. Belshazzar, in his terror and horror, summoned his wise men to declare ivhat the stranae apparition and the blazing letters meant, and promised jreat rewards to the one who should nterpret them; but all failed. Either hey could not make sense of the letera, or could not perceive what meanng they had. Even If they had underitood, It Is not likely that one of them vould dare to speak It out before the ilng. Then the queen mother, mother of 3elshazzar, came in and spoke of Daniel as one who had shown great Clfts at interpretation to his grandfa her Nebuchadnezzar. It took place )efore this boy king was born, and he, naturally, knew nothing about the itory. Daniel was sent for, and came nto the festival hall. He heard the dng'e offer, and spurning It, opoke jrave and true words which might jaeiiy cost dim nis me. ne iuiu iu? itory of Nebuchadnezzar's fall from he height of pride, and accused him )f dishonoring the true Ood. Then he nterpreted the message written on the palace walls: "Thou art weighed n the balances and found wanting." The want of religious restraints and raotlves, exposes one undefended to :he powers of temptation. Belshaxsar vould enrich the splendor of his feast Djr the sacred goblets and dishes of told that Nebuchadnezzar had taken 'rom the temple at Jerusalem. They vere brought, and made to be Instrunents for drunken revelry and lust, tnd worship of Idols, thus declaring hat the Idols had given them the vlcory over the God of the Jews. He lttle realized the power of tho Ood vhom he was defying, nor the reason vhy he had permitted the Jews to bo llsclpllned by exile, and the victory of Hyrus over Babylon wbb one of the neans by which the exiles should be ible to return home, and carry those rery golden vessels back to Jerusa- i em. The church In the wilderness was like the burning bush that Moses j saw; and like the three heroic men In S'ebuchadnezzar's fiery furnace, un- I consumed because God was with hem. The true religion, the principles of the kingdom or heaven, and he laws of God, are certain to trlimph at last over Intemperance and ill its evils. Tho social power of the wine cup, ts connection with feasting, comradeihip. hospitality, good cheer, is one of ts njost dangerous attractions. And >ne of the chief defences against its lower lies In showing that good cheer, ellowshlp, sociability, eating together, may be enjoyed in the highest degree where men "eat and drink and In communion sweet quafT Immortality snd joy," without the fascination of the wine cup. Belshazzar lost his city and his kingdom. So still by intemperance are men continually throwing away the kingdom God has prepared for them, the kingdom of manhood, the kingdom of self-control, the kingdom of the world in which we live and of Its laws which we can compel to aid us in all that Is good. The days of Intemperance are numbered when all the boys become total abstainers. The wlBe young man sees I to it that the whole question of the use of Intoxicating liquors is weighed In the balances of reason, of science, of observation. The fact that we are here and not In heaven is good circumstantial evidence that God has something here for us to do. There is only a little difference be tween different men, but that is what makes them different mem POSITIVELY I BELIEVES WOULD HAVE DIED Fortunate Experience of Lady Who Obtained Relief From Serious Trouble by Taking a Woman's Tonic. Easy to Understand. When Senator John E. ilessln and daughter of Manhattan were doing Europe and Asia last summer, says the Kansas City Journal, they took a motor boat ride on the Sea of Galilee In the party was a New York minister. When the party had finished the ride the minister asked the boatman the amount of the bill. The boatman told him. It was exorbitant. "I can readily understand why Christ walked on the water here," said the minister. Elemental Error. Judge Stevens was angling In the Manitowlsh waters, and Just after dinner became Involved in an argument with his boat companion. In the families of' < Appetite Not a Necessity. . j Dr. John R. Murlln of New York, assistant professor of physiology at the Cornell unlversslty medical college, in an article in the October number of the Journal of the Outdoor Life, compares the food we eat to the fuel used In furnishing steam and power for an engine. In selecting our food he says that we should eat enough to furnish energy for the day's work, but that much more than this Is not needed. He holds that the appetite Is not a necessity for good digestion. "There Is no fallacy of nutrition," he says, "greater than that which supposes that a food cannot be digested and j utilized without appetite." Most of the , food we eat, fully four-flfths. goes to supply energy for our every day tasks, j while less than one-flfth goes to supply building material. Restored Courage.
