About five years ago I wrote to you
that I had been a terrible sufferer

that my physician informed me that
my left kidney was in such condition
that there was no hope for my recovery.
I was advised to try your SwarapRoot

I afterwards forwarded you this irravel

" 'Yes, he has,' snapped the grocer.
" 'But you don't really mean to say,'
exclaimed my friend, 'that he caught
you giving only fifteen ounces to the

" Worse than that!' groaned the
grocer. 'I've been giving seventeen.'"

WHEN JOHNNY CANT H#EAR
Boy at Play It Always Deaf When
His Mother Is Calling
Him.
"Johnny!"
That was his mother calling from a
window and Johnny playing in the
street, but Johnny didn't hear her.
And then:
"Johnny! Come here."
But Johnny is at this moment
reaching up to catch a high ball and
his ears are closed to all calls; whereupon:
"Johnny, do you hear me?"
But Johnny doesn't. He has caught
that ball and now he Is fielding it to
another boy standing by a tree. So,
now:
"Johnny!" this time with a little
staccato in it, and perhaps a faint
suggestion of a slipper.
And does that open Johnny's ears?
Why, he's at the bat now and prepared
to hit the ball a swat that will
send it half way down the block, and
all things else are as naught to him.
But now hear the vigilant mother,
this time gently, for she knows that
boys will be boys:
"Johnny, 1 want you to come In
now."
Johnny is at this moment running
like a wild man, or boy, making for
that tree he was throwing at a moment
ago and utterly oblivious of
everything in the world, the parental
voice included. But that cleaves the
air again now:
"Johnny!"
Jnhnnv it standing with one foot at
the root of the tree and the other foot
extended, all ready to jump and run
when the boy at the bat hits the ball.
"Johnny!"
And Johnny runs like all poaaeseed,
not for home, but for the base,
and there he stands, while from the
window comes again the voice.
NO WONDER."

SUFFERING OF
A WOMAN
Mrs. Garrett, of Vanderroort, Describes
How She Suffered and
> How She Got Relief.
Vandervoort, Ark.?Mrs. Dora Gar- I
rett, of this place, says: "I suffered :
every month, for a year, and got
weaker every day. My head and back
would ache so bad, I could not sit up.
I tried all kinds of medicines, and
they all failed to cure me. Then my
mother told me to take Cardul. When
I had taken one bottle, I was able to
do all of my work. I can recommend
Cardul to be the greatest woman's
remedy in the world. I have used it
and know what it will do."
When a woman is ill, the real trouble
is generally some derangement of
her constitution, and the headache,
and backache, etc., are merely symptoms
of her womanly weakness. The
proper treatment, therefore, is Cardul,
the woman's tonic. No other medicine,
or tonic, has exactly the same
results as Cardul. No other has the
record of so many years of successful
use in cases of womanly ailments.
If Mrs. Garrett had taken Cardul
sooner, she might have been spared
the long sickness and much suffering.
A few doseB of Cardul at the right
time will often save serious suffering
and prevent a long sickness. Don't
delay. Begin to take Cardul at once.

In view of the abnormal weather
which we have had this summer we'
tiiink a tribute of respect should
paid io the memory of Gabriel Daniel
Fahrenheit, who was born on September
16, either in 1736 or 17*0, it ishard
to say which. Before his day several
attempts had been made to measure
the heat level, not the heat, by
tubes contalnig oil of spirits of wine,
but it lay with a bankrupt merchant
of Dantzig to show tow the feat could
be successfully accomplished.
The first thermometers were made
with spirits of wine; but the ingeniour
Gabriel soon adopted mercury as
his medium, and so it has remained
to this day. His instruments speedily
became known throughout the worldand
though*a more rational method of
graduation has since been adopted, the?
popular mind still clings to the Fahrenheit
scale. Our own Royal society
thought highly of this humble inventor
and acknowledged his genius by
making him one of its fellows. To the
"Transactions" of the society he con- ^
tributed several papers.?Pall Mall
