Seven Years for Barn Burning, f
Arthur Ruddick, colored, was I
tried and convicted in Mecklen- I
burg superior court at Charlotte
the past week of setting fire to
the barn of Mr. John Davis, of
Steele Creek, which was burned
on the 10th of July. On Friday
Ruddick was sentenced to seven
years in jail, to be hired out by
the county commissioners, and
the negro's sentence will commence
at once.
The crime fpr which Ruddick I
must spend seven years impris- I
onment cost Mr. Davis something I
like $2,000 in the loss of barn,
stock, etc. The negro was arrested
by Sheriff Wallace and
Constable T. R. Garrison shortly
after the barn was burned and
was held under a $1,000 bond for
his trial last week.
Death of an Aged Lady.
Mrs. Margaret Gordon, relict

Mrs. Gordon was one of Fort||
Mill's oldest ladies, being a iout I
65 years of age. She had been
in poor health for several months '
and for several days preeeing her
death was extremely ill. She is
survived by several sons and
daughter's.
Was Heroine of Ku Klux Days.
A Rock Hill despatch of Monday
to The State says that Mrs.
M. A. Avery, who died Friday at
the home of her daughter, Mrs.
R. C. Laughlin, in Anderson,
was buried in Rock Hill Monday
morning, the funeral services'
being held at Ebenezer church,
the Rev. Alex Martin conducting
the services.
Mrs. Avery was the widow of
Dr. E. T. Avery of York county,
who was a sufferer among those
who were persecuted for alleged
connection with the Ku-KluxKlan,
in consequence of which
he was for years forced to live
away from his home and his
family. During all those troublous
times his wife supported,
reared and educated their family,
and few women in the Southland
suffered as she did for the cause
of truth. As a young wife she
buckled the sword on her young
husband and sent him to the i
front. What property they accumulated
was expended in defense
of her husband on a false j
charge as a Ku-Klux. For days
and weeks she kept him in hiding
in her own home, and, with his
iife and hers at stake, by her
calm demeanor, thwarted the
efforts of those who would destroy
her home for the sake of
gold.

The above sign is familiar to people ;
in every city and large town in the

considerable outlay we have obtained j

are absolutely the hest pharma1

manufactured with the expectation
that their honest value will create the
demand for them.
Are guaranteed and the guarantee is
printed in large type on every package,
and in every case of dissatisfaction we

have had a constant demand for tlx se

the integrity of a drug store in the
