victed in York county in 1907 on
the charge of larceny and sentenced
to five years in the penitentiary,
has been paroled by the |
governor on the condition that j

ating class consists of 93 young
women, one of whom, Miss May
Coltharp, is a Fort Mill lady.
Dr. James B. Allison, one of |
Yorkville's oldest and most highly
esteemed citizens, died at his
home in that city Friday afternoon,
aged about 76 years. Mrs.
Allison died about a year ago, and
since her death the old gentleman
has been gradually declining,
but was confined to his room only
a few days previous to his death.
He is survived by two sons and
three daughters.
Under command of Capt. L. C.
McFadden, about a score of the
members of the Rock Hill mili*r
tary company spent Tuesday and
yesterday at the rifle range of the
Fort Mill company on Catawba
river. The Rock Hill company
has no range upon which to practice
target shooting and Capt.
Spratt of the Fort Mill company
is always ready to grant the
neighboring company the privileges
of his range.
Rev. James Russell, of Chester,
the beloved and widely-known
evangelist of Bethel presbytery,
will hp hpard in Fort Mill next
Sunday. Mr. Russell will occupy
the pulpit of the Presbyterian
church, morning and evening,
as the pastor. Rev. Mr.
Hafner, will be in Bowling Green
conducting a meeting there in
the Presbyterian church, which
has been without a pastor since
the death some time ago of Rev.
J. W. Wyly.
Richard Railey, a white man
who has been employed for some
time in one of the local cotton
mills, was arrested Sunday afternoon
by Officer Potts under a
bench warrant issued by the
clerk of court of Lancaster county.
The charge against Railey
is adultery, the alleged offence
having been committed in Lan

until Monday evening, when he
was taken to Lancaster by Deputy
Sheriff Culp, of that city.
Mr. A. H. Merritt, Sr., one of
the Fort Mill veterans who attended
the reunion in Little Rock.
Ark., last week, arrived safely at
home Monday morning. Mr.
Merritt stated that the reunion
was the best of the several he
has attended in the past few
years. The old soldiers were
well housed and fed and the entertainment
was good in every
respect. While on the trip Mr.
Merritt visited the family of a
deceased brother at Jacksonville,
Ark.

university before his return. He

The Southern Power company
a few days ago closed a contract
with the Westinghouse company
for ten 500-kw. motor-generator
sets, fourteen 55-ton locomotives
and twenty-three 90 horse power
quadruple motor equipments, together
with transmission and substation
equipment. This apparatus
will be used on the lines of
the Greenville, Spartanburg &
Anderson Railway and branches
controlled by the Piedmont syndicate.
Farmers are warned not to'
leave empty nitrate of soda sacks
lying in or around their barns or
other out houses. As long as the
sacks are full of the soda, they
are damp and there is no danger
from fire. As soon as the sacks
are emptied they become dry and !
will ignite unuer certain cuuditions.
Many a farmer, it is !
said, has lost his property from
this cause, and has never known
the cause of the fire. Destroy
them, if they cannot be rendered
harmless in some other way.
Mr. and Mrs. VVaddy C. Thompson,
of Lancaster, have issued

their daughter, Miss Hessie
Thompson, and Patrick B. Morrah,
to be solemnized in the First
Baptist church of Lancaster the ,

The commencement exercises
of the Fort Mill graded school
were held in the auditorium on
Wednesday and Thursday.
Dr. S. C. Mitchell of the University
of South Carolina made
an address on Wednesday evening.

At a meeting of the trustees

Bess Poag as assistant principal.
Miss Yarborough will go to New
York to study and Miss Ardrey
has accepted a position at Leesville.
Lost Home by Fire.
Friday morning at 3 o'clock the
house occupied by Geo. Erwin,
a colored tenant on the plantation
of Mr. Z. T. Bailes in upper

portion of his household effects.
How the fire originated is not
known.

of neighbors who by the us(

fire spreading. Mr. Bailes was

gone to the reunion at Litth
Rock several days before.
