This encampment is an annual affair for the two companies, and results < in great benefit to its members, j J. F. Friends of Winthrop college are rejoicing over the news of the generous slice of thePeabod.v fund which she will secure this year. The amount apportioned to Winthrop is $90,000 and will go far toward supplying some of the pressing needs of the college % - J _ in the way ot larger accommodations. I The Times is in receipt of an 1 invitation to the commencement exercises of Winthrop college, which are to be held June 4, 5 and 6. The baccalaureate sermon Sunday evening June 4, is to be preached by Rev. R. Stuart MacArthur, D. D. The gradu-' ating class consists of 93 young women, one of whom, Miss May Coltharp, is a Fort Mill lady. Dr. James B. Allison, one of | Yorkville's oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, died at his home in that city Friday afternoon, aged about 76 years. Mrs. Allison died about a year ago, and since her death the old gentleman has been gradually declining, but was confined to his room only a few days previous to his death. He is survived by two sons and three daughters. Under command of Capt. L. C. McFadden, about a score of the members of the Rock Hill mili*r tary company spent Tuesday and yesterday at the rifle range of the Fort Mill company on Catawba river. The Rock Hill company has no range upon which to practice target shooting and Capt. Spratt of the Fort Mill company is always ready to grant the neighboring company the privileges of his range. Rev. James Russell, of Chester, the beloved and widely-known evangelist of Bethel presbytery, will hp hpard in Fort Mill next Sunday. Mr. Russell will occupy the pulpit of the Presbyterian church, morning and evening, as the pastor. Rev. Mr. Hafner, will be in Bowling Green conducting a meeting there in the Presbyterian church, which has been without a pastor since the death some time ago of Rev. J. W. Wyly. Richard Railey, a white man who has been employed for some time in one of the local cotton mills, was arrested Sunday afternoon by Officer Potts under a bench warrant issued by the clerk of court of Lancaster county. The charge against Railey is adultery, the alleged offence having been committed in Lan 1 Dojiz,,, caster several nium.ua ngu. iwuv.< was held by the local authorities until Monday evening, when he was taken to Lancaster by Deputy Sheriff Culp, of that city. Mr. A. H. Merritt, Sr., one of the Fort Mill veterans who attended the reunion in Little Rock. Ark., last week, arrived safely at home Monday morning. Mr. Merritt stated that the reunion was the best of the several he has attended in the past few years. The old soldiers were well housed and fed and the entertainment was good in every respect. While on the trip Mr. Merritt visited the family of a deceased brother at Jacksonville, Ark. V, Mrs!" Elizabeth Ardrey has been seriously ill for a week or more it her home on Booth street. The Belmont, N. C., baseball ;eam is scheduled to cross bats vith the local team on the Fort Mill diamond this (Thursday) ifternoon at 4 o'clock. Belmont s said to have a strong team and :he game this afternoon doubtess will be well worth going to see. Prof. F. G. Potts of the University of S. C., son of Hon. and Mrs. 0. W. Potts of Pleasant Valley, sailed last week for Europe, where he will spend two vears in travel and study. Prof. Potts will probably take his Ph D. degree from a German university before his return. The Southern Power company a few days ago closed a contract with the Westinghouse company for ten 500-kw. motor-generator sets, fourteen 55-ton locomotives and twenty-three 90 horse power quadruple motor equipments, together with transmission and substation equipment. This apparatus will be used on the lines of the Greenville, Spartanburg & Anderson Railway and branches controlled by the Piedmont syndicate. Farmers are warned not to' leave empty nitrate of soda sacks lying in or around their barns or other out houses. As long as the sacks are full of the soda, they are damp and there is no danger from fire. As soon as the sacks are emptied they become dry and ! will ignite unuer certain cuuditions. Many a farmer, it is ! said, has lost his property from this cause, and has never known the cause of the fire. Destroy them, if they cannot be rendered harmless in some other way. Mr. and Mrs. VVaddy C. Thompson, of Lancaster, have issued invitations to the marriage of their daughter, Miss Hessie Thompson, and Patrick B. Morrah, to be solemnized in the First Baptist church of Lancaster the , evening of June 1. The commencement exercises of the Fort Mill graded school were held in the auditorium on Wednesday and Thursday. Dr. S. C. Mitchell of the University of South Carolina made an address on Wednesday evening. Thursday morning the following programme was carried out: Doxology, by the audience. Prayer, by Rev. T. J. White. Solo?"Absent," by Elizabeth Nims. Song? "America." Address?"The Making of a Man," by Rev. E. K. Hardin of Rock Hill. / Song by primary grades. Awarding of D. A. R. essay medal, by Rev. E. K. Hardin. This medal was awarded to Miss Isabel Massey. At 6:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon the daisy chain procession, crowning the May queen, Miss Olive Harris, and the May pole dance took place on the school campus. Thursday night at 8:30 o'clock the programme was as follows: Chorus, "Happy Days." Debate: "Resolved, That the tide of immigration turned South would promote Southern inter ests." Affirmative, Misses Aline Barber and Esther McMurray: negative. Misses Isabel Massey and Ola Crowder. The debater's medal was awarded to Miss Crowder. Awarding of diplomas to grad uating class by Prof. Crum. BOARD ELECTS TEACHERS. At a meeting of the trustees | Wednesday afternoon, the following teachers were elected: Superintendent xMoore of Pacolet, to succeed Superintendent Crum, who expects to continue his studies at Harvard next year; Misses Garrison, Hinshaw and Wilson of the present force: Miss Isabel Grier of Fort Mill to fill the vacancy caused by the resigj nation of Mrs. Sellers, and Miss Bess Poag as assistant principal. Miss Yarborough will go to New York to study and Miss Ardrey has accepted a position at Leesville. Lost Home by Fire. Friday morning at 3 o'clock the house occupied by Geo. Erwin, a colored tenant on the plantation of Mr. Z. T. Bailes in upper " * ' i * J 1 n Fort Mill, was uestroyeu uy me. The fire had gained great headway when discovered and Erwir was able to save only a small portion of his household effects. How the fire originated is not known. The burned house was only j short distance from the home oi Mr. Bailes and it was feared foi awhile that the latter would alsc be burned. By ringing the farrr bell and using the telephone th< Misses Bailes summoned a number of neighbors who by the us( of water buckets prevented the fire spreading.
