this (Wednesday) afternoon Memorial
Day exercises are in progress
at the Presbyterian church.
A large crowd is taking part in
the exercises.
The Times this week received
an interesting communication
from Yorkville, but for the reason
the writer failed to sign his
name the paper declines to publish
it.
According to notice elsewhere,
the collection of street tax for the
year 1911 will begin on Monday.
May 15. After June 15 the usual
penalty will be imposed on delinquents.
Mr. M. B. Massey, who has
been in the grocery business here
for many years, has sold his
interest in M. B. Massey & Go's
store to Mr. J. M. Salters, of this

Ed Caton, the Mecklenburg
man about whom so much has
been said in the papers lately,
was several days ago taken to
the Mecklenburg chaingang to
serve 16 months of an unexpired
term.
Some idea as to the extent to
which clean-up day was observed

statement of Liveryman J. W.
McEihaney that his wagons during
the last week hauled off 53
two-horse loads of the rubbish.

between the Fort Mill and Concord
teams resulted in an even
break, Fort Mill winning the
first by a score of 6 to 2, and
Concord taking the second by a
score of 6 to 5.

lose a cow is indeed quite a loss.

Services in preparation for the
administration of the sacrament
of the Lord's supper at the Fort
Mill Presbyterian church next
Sabbath will begin Friday morning
at 11 o'clock with a sermon
by Rev. Alexander Martin, of
Rock Hill. Rev. Mr. Martin will
also fill the pulpit of the church
Friday evening at 8 o'clock and
Saturday at 11 a. m.
Mr. F. P. King, a farmer of
upper Fort Mill township was
painfully injured in a runaway
accident Friday evening while

frightened and ran away, throwing
him out of the buggy and in
the fall he received a gash across
the face which came near severing
one of his ears. Otherwise
Mr. King's injuries were slight.
The farmers have made excellent
progress in their work
during the last two weeks. A
great many have completed planting
cotton and are now preparing
their bottom lands for corn. More
attention has been given to the
preparation of the soil titan has
been any year previous it is said,
and with the energy and push
manifested by them and a normal
crop year a great harvest is
expected this fall.
The law having been in effect
a full year, the inspectors have
been instructed to commence the
rigid enforcement of the regulation
regarding corn, corn meal
and feed-stutfs. The department

industries, has interpreted tin
statute liberally during the past

the endurance run of the Savannah
automobile club are scheduled
to arrive in Lancaster at 1 o'cloc k
today, where the autoists will renfain
for two hours for luncheon.
This luncheon will be given at

Death of a Popular Young Mao.
Sad indeed was the passing last
Wednesday afternoon at 6 o'clock
of J. Roschelle Haile, Jr., eldest
son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Haile.
The young man had been in declining
health for a year or more !
and his death though not un- j
expected was a sad shock to his
many friends. The funeral service
was conducted from the
home on Booth street Thursday
afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev.
W. A. Hafner, assisted by Rev.
S. P. Hair, after which the body
was laid to rest in the town
cemetery.
Mr. Haile was born in Kershaw
county May 15, 1885. When
quite young his father moved to
Charlotte and there the young
man distinguished himself upon
the high standing he made in his
studies at the city schools. Upon
the removal of the family to Fort
Mill some years later Mr. Haile
was appointed over a number of
applicants to the position of mail
carrier on rural route No. 1, the
first route established in Fort
Mill township. In this position, !
which he filled for four years,
he was always accomodating and !
courteous and was. greatly ad- j
mired by the patrons whom he |
served. Mr. Hailo resigned the
position of mail carrier to enter
the Atlanta School of Medicine,
and when forced on account of
ill health to abandon his studies,
in the fall of 1910, was within
four months of graduation. Since
his return to Fort Mill he spent
a large part of the time af Black
Mountain. N. C., in the hope of
regaining his health, but the
mountain air proved of but little
benefit to him. Fcr the past two
it
months Mr. Haue nau oeen confined
to his home.
Mr. Haile was a young man of
excellent character, and intellectually
ranked with the foremost
young men of this section.
His death marked the close of a
most promising career.

graded school and as a result the

The following is the section of
the school law under which the
election is to be held:
Section 2. That between the
first day of April and the first
day of June, 1911, to be fixed by
the present board of trustees and
by them advertised for at least
two weeks in some newspaper
published in Ycrk county, an
election shall be held in Fort Mill
at the usual voting precincts for
nine persons to serve said school
districts as a board of trustees,
three of whom shall serve respectively
for two years and six
years, to be determined by them
at their first meeting by lot. and
every two years thereafter the
successors of those whose term
of office expire shall be elected
for terms of six years at the
municipal election of the town of
Fort Mill, and until their successors
are elected and qualified.
And said board of trustees shall
during their term of office have
power to fill vacancies occurring
therein arising from any cause
Provided that no person shall be
eligible to become a member oi
said board, unless he is a patror
of said school or personally contributes
to the support of the
school of said districts.
