The highest price paid for cotton
on the Fort Mill market
yesterday was 14 1-4 cents.
The close season of 1911 began
Tuesday and until the 15th of
November it will be unlawful to
kill partridges in South Carolina.

Mr. J. N. McElwee, one of
Rock Hill's prominent merchants,
was in Fort Mill Monday for the
first time in years. In 1881 Mr. i
McElwee was a student of the
old Fort Mill academy and he recalled
with pleasure the boyhood
days he spent here.
A "Lancaster special to the Charlotte
Observer Tuesday said: j
"The many friends throughout
the State of Capt. Samuel E.
White, formerly of Fort Mill but
now of Lancaster, will regret to
learn that he is critically ill at
the home of his son-in-law. Col. !
Leroy Springs."
A force of 20-odd workmen of
the Southern Power company began
a few days ago the work of
replacing the power wires between
the dam, three miles north
of Fort Mill, and Clover. It is 1
said that the lines to Clover have
given a great deal of trouble
recently, which is attributed to 1
the inferior quality of the wire.

the treasury department will be
favorable to the bank in every
particular and that the doors of
the institution will open for bus-,
iness in the next ten days.
An enthusiastic meeting of the
York County Boys' Corn club was
held at the court house in Yorkville
Saturday. The club now
numbers several score members
.and the interest each member
r ' displayed in the prospect of,
raising the prise acre augurs well
for the agricultural interests of
the county. The following Fort
M'll boys are members of the
club: Morgan Paris, William
Belk, Parks Boyd. Roy Patterson.
It will perhaps be surprising
to many to learn that The Appeal
to Reason, the Kansas political
paper cf socialistic persuasion
whose editor was recently saved
a stay of six months in a Federal
jail by the intervention of President
Taft, has a circulation of
about a hundred copies in Fort
Mill. It. is stated that most of
the copies of the paper which
come to Fort Mill go to the
workers in the cotton mills,
though few of the subscribers
acknowledge allegiance to the
Socialist party.
Messrs. F. Nims and sons, ;
Kenneth and Fred, and W. B.
White, well known farmers of
the township, are arranging to
enter this year a field of agriculture
new to this section. Sev-!
eral acres of the best land on the
splendid plantation of Mr. F.
Nims, two miles south of town,
are being prepared for the cultivation
of choice varieties of c >fton
and corn seed for market. If
the undertaking is successful this i
year, it is the purpose of these
gentlemen to go into the seed
business on a largt r scale another
year.
