An Incentive to Work.
Seed catalogs are now being
eagerly scanned by people who
have ten square feet or more of
land in which to make a garden,
says an exchange. One looks
with undiluted admiration and
wonder at the colored plates on
which flowers, fruits and vegetables
of gigantic size are alluringly
portrayed. Undismayed by
former failures there is scarcely
an amateur gardener but fondly
hopes and believes at the budding
of each springtime that he is
going to raise asters, pansies,
sweet peas, strawberries, tomatoes,
and every other kind of
plant that will equal in size and
appearance the specimens depicted
on colored plates of the
catalog. Of course he will fail,
he will have a sharp realization
that there is a great difference
between the actual and the ideal.
But for all that he will get lots
of joy and valuable experience
out ot his efforts. He will sometimes
see the sun rise in the
morning, which is something very
few people do. He will also get
an abundance of fresh air. a good
appetite, better health and a fascinating
knowledge of nature as
revealed in plant life. Besides
this the ideal colored pictures in
the catalog are after all a real
spur to achievement. So get you
a catalog and go to work. You
may not have great success in
raising plants and flowers, but
you will get something you need
just as much, good, wholesome
exercise and a sun bath occasionally.
A Bovish Fantasy.
I wonder if ever there'll come
a time when the woods are cool
and the fishing's prime; when the
wild birds sing and the fellows
trill and whistle and call, as fellows
will! 1 wonder if ever
there'll come a day when the
wood's all chopped and piled
away; when the walk is swept
and the cow is staked on the
picket-line and the yard is raked;
when the lawn is mowed and the
errands run: when the water's
pumped and the chores are done;
when the baby's rocked and put
to sleep, and there's nothing to
rake or chop or sweep; when a
boy can look around and see that
everything's as it ought to be;
tlud all of the work he had is
through: that there isn't a thing
he ouglu to do. and a hoy can
breathe a restful sigh when he
hears the fellows shouting by and
toss his hat with a wealth of joys,
and run right off with the other
boys! Such time may come and
you may see, but it never, never
came to me! W. J. Foley, in
Saturday Evening Post.
Headed for the Penitentiary.
Two youthful negro thieves.
Moultrie Glenn and John Glenn,
sister and brother, aged 8 and 5
years, respectively, were haled
before Magistrate McElhaney
Thursday morning for stealing
four hens from Mr. lb N. Gaston.
In great fear of the wrath of the
law. the little negroes admitted
the theft of the chickens, one of
which was subsequently returned
to the owner, the others having
been sold. Concluding that the
negroes had no money with which
to pay a fine and that it would

county to send them to the chainpa

aprced to drop the case
upon the payment of the cost.
Mr. (laston sa: ! t! at $1 each for
the stolen liens would satisfy
him, so the mother of the pickaninnies
pot husy and by mortpapinp
a pip settled the case.

Here's Your Chance
We have several thousand dollars
worth of finished marble and granite
monuments on our yard. This is more
than we consider necessary to carry
and w< wish to reduce it by one-half
between this time and the end of the
year. In order to do this we are offering
any headstone or monument now in
stock at a lower price than other dealers
have to pay for the same work.
No use to pay $100 for a monument
when you can buy the same thing from
Us at $7f>. The agent gets the difference.
