The Wages of Strong Drink.
Walterboro Press and Standard.
"I did lot vote for him for the
position of circuit judge, because
I saw him under the influence of
strong drink." This is a remark
made by a member of the Legis- !
lature after the recent election
for judge to fill the unexpired
term of the late Judge Dantzler, ,
of Orangeburg. This legislator ;
did not question the ability of the j
applicant for judgeship, but we :
doubt if there is a person in the j
State who will censure him for I
not voting for a person who!
drinks. Thus it is seen that
another young man had to stand
by and see his golden opportuni- ;
ty slip away from him because i
of the habit of drink. How long
will our voung men continue to
commit this kind of suicide? Will
they never realize that the times
demand sober men, men who
will not drink?
A September Term Court.
If the bill introduced in the!
house some days ago by Representative
Thos. F. McDow fixing
the time for holding the courts
in York county is approved, an
additional term of common pleas
court will be held in September.
"Without the September term,"
writes Mr. McDow to The Times,
"I see no chance to relieve the
congested condition of our calen-1

seems little doubt that it will be
passed by both the house and the
senate.
Creators at Winthrop College.
On next Saturday, February
11, at 2:30 p. m., Creatore and
his band will appear at Winthrop
college. Everywhere Creatore
and his band have appeared they
have been received with the
greatest enthusiasm.
In commenting: on the concert
recently given in Boston the Boston
Record said as follows: "Adjectives
failed the brilliant audience
which assembled in Symphony
hall last evening for
Creature's first concert. No band
artist who has ever visited Boston
has created such a furore as
Creatore has. His control over
his players is wonderful. They
became a band or a symphony
orchestra as he willed, and in
both were equally successful."
Free Fight ia the Cotton Market.
Abbeville Press and Banner.
The Hon. Joshua Ashley, of
Anderson, who is a member of
the present Legislature has introduced
a bill in the house prohibiting
any incorporated town in
South Carolina from charging
cotton and cotton seed buyers a
license.
Mr. Ashley's reason for introducing
such a bill is that it may
encourage buyers for the staple
ind seed. He says that we should
encourage buying rather than
discourage it by charging a license
for the privilege. It is
<aid that the bill has received
Tiuch favorablp eritinism ;ind will
ikely become a law.
There is no doubt but that such
i bill will be favorable to the
farmers, for under its provisions
my one who wishes may buy
cotton on the streets. Heretofore
riany individuals have bought
otton as a speculation but not
>eing licensed buyers they have
secured their stock through li:ensed
buyers.
