OUF * i mTHF. WORLD GROWING BETTER? I i I'rettbyterian Standard. j This is an old question, but one ; that recurs to the mind at this! season when our hands are reach- I ing up for the bellrope to ring) out the old year and ring in the i new. What progress are wej making, what ground are we j gaining, what new hope holding as the silent years flit like noise- j less spectres and the shadow of the cross lies larger on the ground? Of course the world is irrovviner better. It is the answer of optimism, the answer of faith, the answer of fact. Time was when sickly infants were exposed to die; they are tenderly cared for now. Men were held in slavery, now the sun shines only upon the faces of the free. Criminals were branded with red hot irons; they are now regarded as human and given some chance at reformation and restoration. The insane. the feeble-minded, the epileptic, the blind, the deaf and dumb were once treated as negligible factors in human society or regarded with superstitious fear; today every effort is made to remedy the defects of their original endowment and give them a chance at life and happiness. Sin is as black as ever, its complexion never changes. Some people in the world are as bad as the worst specimens our degenerate race has ever furnished. But the old world itself is rolling out of darkness into light and in the sensitizing of the public conscience, the elevation of the! moral standard, the broadening sense of brotherhood, the widening of human sympathy we see the reddening of the eastern sky and the prophecy of a glorious day. The world, under the influence ol' the church, is growing betterin its morals, in its literature, in the provision it is making for the comfort, health and happiness of the people. Fiction has made; strides since the dav when rxilite society saw nothing offensive in the indecent writings of Swift and Richardson and Smollet. Medicine, too, since the days ; w hen a tourniquet and saw were all that a surgeon required for amputation. Last year a million lives were saved in British India against cholera alone. In all London there was not a single death from smallpox or typhoid fever. The rate of mortality along the Panama canal has been reduced from 170 per thousand to 8.31 per thousand, and the mortality from tuberculosis has been reduced 40 per cent. The same spirit that taught the "beloved physician, Luke," is teaching our physicians to render life more certain and tolerable. Think, too, of our domestic comforts as contrasted with the lives! of our ancestors only a century or two ago, when there were no glass windows in their homes, and when the smoke curled up through a hole in the roof? In all these things do we see no working of God's spirit, no evi-1 dence of His life and presence? ? ???-Camp Cole L. Blease. (Written for The Timed.) The annual Xmas possum hunt of the Cole Blease club, of Gold Mill, was held at their camp in the India Hook hills near the Catawba river. The camp is lo- ; cated in an ideal spot between j two large hills by a sparkling! spring. Mr. A. B. Watson, of I Charlotte, and Mr. S. C. Runkle, j of Washington, were the guests of the club. All the members | xjiTsre present and engaged in the ' hunt, which resulted in 75 rab- | bits, 16 birds and 4 possums being j put on the camp fire. Of course, j the "refreshments" were there also. S. Mrs. Cook Tells Truth. Dexter, Ky. ? In a signed statement, Mrs. Cook tells the truth about how Cardui brought back her health and strength. She says, 44I could not get any relief, until I tried Cardui. the woman's tonic. I suffered more or less for 10 years, and was so weak and nervous I could hardly do my house work. Now I am in better health than ever before, am regular as clock work, do not suffer at all. and gain strength every day." Thousands of women have been helped back to health by Cardui.
