Loosest Prison Wall in the World, j
The concrete wall at the Fed-,
eral prison in Atlanta, on which
work was begun in 1903, was i
completed last month. It is said
to be the longest prison wall iti
the world and is the largest piece
of concrete construction that has
ever been built, with the excep- i
tion of the concrete bridge work
over which a railroad has been 1
strung across the Florida keys.
This wall is 4,300 feet long, or '
about four-fifths of a mile. It is i
30 feet high and is 4 feet thick
at the bottom and 2 at the top. \
It incloses about 28 acres of land.
The principal object of the wall j
is to prevent prisoners from escaping.
It also allows the men!
to be exercised in the open air,
doing away with the necessity ,
of putting them through their;
exercises indoors.
Wild Geese Traveling Southward.
Local weather prophets have
seen the signs in the heavens
and are certain that a killing frost
accompanied by muoh cooler
weather than has yet been felt
in South Carolina this fall will
come within ten days. A sure
sign of cold weather, these
prophets say, is the flight of wild
geese southward, and as the first!
flock of the season was observed
Sunday afternoon headed for a
milder clime, if the sign is worth
anything there will be a considerable
drop in the temperature
soon. The flock of geese was
flying directly southward and
was so high that the individuals
were almost indiscernible, but
their honk, honk unmistakably
disclosed their presence.
No More Bur'al Dues.
"Martha, what does that negro
man standing at the back door
want?" asked a Fort Mill lady of
her colored cook.
"He's cum ter collect mv hnr'al
dues, which I pays twict er
munf."
"I am surprised at the little
sense you show in giving that
negro your money. None of the
money you are paying him will
help bury you. Did you ever hear
of burial being denied anyone in
this country?"
Returning to the collector,
Martha said: "Look here, nigger,
what 'suranceyou gwine gim me
dat de bur'al associashun will
'tend ter puttin' me erway when
I dies? Ise been thinkin' 'bout
how easy it would be fur you to
steal my money and put it in
your little ole store er run away
wid it and der balance uf de
niggers would have ter take up
er eollecshun 'mong de white
folks ter bury me. Get out er
here, you low down black thief.
Ise rough dis mornin' and I'll fix
you fur bury in' if you don't git
scarce at onct."
