The Record says what was perhaps tlie most. revolting of all crimes that have ever been committed in Columbia criminal annuls occurred Tuesday n-fleraoou in the northwestern section of the city. A negro, armed with a pistol, compelled the wife of * well-known paper hanger and painter to yield to his fiendish designs. The lady a as in a precarious condition Tuesday night, but Wednesday morning tier condition was reported to i>e somewhat improved. No one but her husband and an intimate friend are allowed to be at her side, by the advice of the attending physician, "Sire is completely prostrated. The home of the husband and wife is on Lincoln street between Klruwood avr-une and Lumber streets, in the family beside* the husband aud wife are two pretty children. T-ti^jjday afternoon at about 2:U0 o'clock the woman bad just told a visitor goodbye and had returned to (tie rear of the house to resume her dojhesttr duties. A uegro whom ?rhe had never seen before appeared at the front door explaining that Inbad brought a letter from her futhter. "Krotu my father?" she exclaimed. being very much surprised at. the negro's remarks, "what do you mean"" "Here's what I mean, the negro said drawing the pistol. The circumstances of the attack ou the woman are too revolting for (publication. When the negro left the bouse site sent one of her children to a neighbor's, asking for immediate assistance. Making her way to -a telephone she summoned the employer of her husband. The neighbors informed Policeman Milette. who was on his boat in the neighborhood. and he soon learned the facts of the ease and started in nnrsnlt of the negro who is about 2il years of age. "Hefore the criminal assault took Hare word was received from north Iducolii street that a negro armed M'ltli a (Tistol was threatening to -*?hout a nuinher of persons in the neighborhood, and the resolve otti eer. Policeman Hite, responded. He followed l.iueoln street to Second Street, where he overtook and arrested Itird. The negro scented surprised nt the arrest and demanded to know the charge against him. "Kor carrying a pistol." replied the police* man. who quickly disarmed hint. While waiting for the patrol wasOU, Policeman Milett came up and recognized the no-'ro as answering the description of the man for whom he was searching. The officers took the negro to the home of the woman sod she in the pi" seuce of the otlirers and a neighbor said without ap parent hesitation, "Yes. that's the man." The pistol which had been taken from Itird was shown her and <?he identified the weapon as being the one that the negro had used. Kd Itird is the full name of the fiend. He is a carpenter and claims thai he went to Columbia from Or* sngehurg a few weeks ago. IJiid w?s first taken to police headquarters ami formally pliced under arrest. fearing lest public indignation would assert itself in a mob spirit, the police had the negro removed to the i>eni'??niiary a short lime afterwards. Kit automobile with rhe prisoner and the officers quietly left police headquarters and a few minutes afterwards he had been placed behind the walls of the penitentiary and before the news of the horrible crime had became generally known. Says Mr. Barrett: "Now about that wife of yours. 1 wonder if you "v?v think what an indispensable inilu once she has been for your own welfare in this world, and for the Ken erul advancement of the country? "1 doubt it. A good wife we art too apt to take like we do the sur. | shine and the fertility of the fields ? as a matter of course. "They call the farmer 'he hope and the support of America. It is his wife that is the inspiration of the hope and the bedrock of the support1.
