Resisted Arrest and the Shooting

Five negroes were killed and two
others wore mortally wounded on
Thursday, when the seven, taking issue
with Deputy Shr.IIT Sid Cauley.

of "cutting him down."

farmer, near Elliott Thursday afternoon.

negroes ceased their work In the
field and, grabbing pitchforks, and
other farming tools, made for the
deputy. CauJey, however, opened
fire with two revolvers before the
belligerents came within striking
distance and, before the others of
the posse .had regained their wits,
five of the attacking party were dead
and the remainder wounded. The
deputy surrendered, but was release
1 to appear for formal hearing.
Several days ago an attempt was
made to effect the canture of the negroes,
but the arresting officer withdrew
when they employed sltni.ar
tactics to those of Thursday.

Fatal Results.
A negro dwelling on the plantation
of Mr. J. E. I'rivett. In the
lack Swamp section, ahout six miles
north of Florence, was destroyed by
lire ahout 10 o'clock Monday night,
in which threo children lost their
lives and another was so badly burned
that it will probably die. Mitt
Kefy, the mother of the children,
locked them up in her house and
went to church, leaving them ?n the
charge of the oldest .gtrl. ahout 8
years old. Not long after the woman
left, the house was seen to be
on fire and assistance was given,
but before anything could be done
the three children were roasted
alive. The oldest child managed
to get out? of the house and being
frightened, ran to a neighbor for assistance,
forgetting about the other
four in the liou.se, one of which escaped,
after considerable effort, in
a horribly burned condition.

tire which early Thursday at New
York burned out the three upper
stories of an eleven story factory
building at Lewis and Rivinglnn
streets, near the Manhattan eud of
the Williamsburg bridge. The dead
man was Parrish Kged. a watchman,
whose burned body was found on
the sixth floor where he had fallen
while trying to escape. An unnamed
hoy, who was given permission to
spend the night on the roof, is believed
to have perished.

put a stop to a steadily increasing
llood of letters front women throughout
the country who seek information
about an examination for stenographers

in all the State and Territories. Tnis
examination is for the purpose of
recruiting only men stenographers
and typists, the demand fir whom
the civil service commission tins been
unable to meet. Practically all the
various departments of the Government
are seeking to replace women
steuogrphers with men, on the plea

discipline.

Yarborough Is between fifty and

wife. The crime is alleged te have
happened near Ya rborough's home,
