s ?? Secret of dw South's Progress. Washington Herald. The one who investigates, even carelessly and superficially, will find the secret of the South's present progress and great promise of the future easy enough to fathom. The contrasting of conditions today with these or a decade ago are not astonishing only?they are profoundly and lastingly impressive. The South is keeping its money at home. Not the sum total, perhaps, but more and more of it every day, By and by, all of it, approximately, will stay there. A few years back the South produced much raw material, but it did not manufacture. Cotton?its great staple?brought a large influx of wealth into Dixie annually, but it immediately utonf Kanlr V.oaf ir* novmonf ffViinrvo the South could not get at home. Nowadays, the South is learning to trade with itself, all the way from the cotton field to the clothing store. Over onehalf of the cotton grown in the South is now manufactured in the South. It is only a question of time until the whole of the cotton crop will be manufactured there. Hand in hand with the expansion of the manufacturing interests down Dixie way goes the safe-and-sane exploitation of the South's financial institutions. Its banking houses are multiplying by leaps and bounds; its life and fire insurance companies are waxing stronger every year. A veritable flood of golden dollars, once flowing?apparently forever?towards N *w York and New England, now spreads itself around and about its own clime and nourishes its home soil in a way that soil has never before been nourished. Are the young men of the South seeking fields of endeavor in other sections today? They are not; they do not have to! At home the wages are good, or better; the work as honorable, and the outlook, at least, as rosy as anywhere else on earth. The developing manhood of Dixie is standing pat on Dixie ? and well it may. It holds a hand hard to beat. Far from losing anything with respect to its assets of this character, the South is calling its exiles home in hundreds of instances, and the call is being answered! No wonder the whole country looks toward this awakened section and predicts for it a tomorrow of tremenaous things. The South is helping itself within itself. It is keeping what it gets, and it is getting what it can. Its overflow presently will serve merely to increase its home surplus. It is utilizing all of its waste?or that which it once considered waste, ii in ram 10 see now me soutn can fail to win out handsomely, so long as it plays the game after its present fashion.
