r . - ' ' J ?jk*, , SHORT ITEMS of INTEREST , to TIMES READERS. Not one line of .advertising has appeared in The Times from the i office of probate judge since L. R. Williams assumed the duties of the office. A case of considerable interest L!-L L 1 i ? ? ? ^ which prooaoiy win oe tried at the present session of the court of general sessions is that of W. O. Bailes, charged with adultery. J. P. McMurray has resigned the clerkship which he has held for several years with a Rock Hill bank and will become cashier of the Yorkville Loan and Savings bank on May 1. Monday afternoon Ira G. Smythe was the recipient of a beautiful walking stick, made of orange wood. The stick was sent Mr. Smythe by his friend, A. Y. Williamson, from Jacksonvilie, Fla. E. E. Thornwell, a former, Fort Mill citizen, has been appointed magistrate for Hartsville by Governor Ansel. Mr. Thornwell has been practicing law in Darlington county for several years. Up to this time there has not been held the usual meeting of the local camp of Confederate veterans to elect delegates to the : general reunion of the United Confederate Veterans and it now I seems that the soldiers of this section will not have representn- j tion at the Mobile reunion. A meeting of the board of1 trustees of the Fort Mill graded school was held Monday afternoon at which was discussed the sale of the bonds voted last April for a new building. The board is in correspondence with a Chattanooga broker who says he will buy the bonds. Mrs. Mary Barber, mother of ex-Attorney General W. A. Barber and a kinswoman of the Barber families of Fort Mill and the Pleasant Valley section of Lan-1 caster county, died at a hospital in Chester last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Barber's home was at Richburg:. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and was 69 years old. The spring session of the RiverIP^ side school, of which Miss Louise Dye was teacher, closed Saturday afternoon. The session was marked by improvement in all ; the grades and the work of Miss , Dye is duly appreciated by the trustees as was evidenced by her reelection to teach at the! summer session of the school, which begins July 15th. After spending a few days with rela- j tives in Fort Mill, Miss Dye will i leave for her home in Kershaw the latter part of the week. A 12-hour ra:n fell in this i section Saturday night, begin-j ning at 8 o'clock p. m. and con- j tinuing until about the same hour Sunday morning. The rain was greatly welcomed by everyone. It was badlv needed i as little rain had fallen in this section since the latter part of February and much of the farm work which is ordinarily done during the first half of April had been deferred on account of the lack of moisture in the earth. Many farmers had suspended work entirely, but there were others who had begun to plant! their cotton. All are again at work, however, thankful for the opportune showers. Small Store Burned. The store of E. P. H. Nivens, two miles north of Fort Mill on the Steele Creek road, was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock Monday morning. Mr. Nivens' loss is about $300, with no insurance. The fire is supposed to have been of incendiary origin, as there was no one in the building for several hours before it was burned, Mr. Nivens being in Yorkviile at the time. There has been some feeling in the neigh-! borhood against Mr. Nivens as1 u/qo n\n"ilnr?pn< 1 o Cawr ? ? ??wo v* iv?vn^v.u c% iv?* iiiwuiud aj;u when an attempt was made to assassinate him. There is said to be no clue to the person or persons who set fire to the building. More than 1,000 acres of forest . were burned over near Blaeks* burg a few days ago. The damage amounts to about $2,000, it is said by those who have seen the burned area. Several houses were destroyed. The wind was high and the combustible matter was very dry. Immense damage was done to young1 timber. Various persons had cordwood cut and left in the woods. It was all burned. Griffon Clothes for men and young men.
