' (- 1 SHORT ITEMS of INTEREST to TIMES READERS. Miss Dora Grier is visiting1 relatives in Charlotte. Mrs. J. M. Gamble is a patient at a hospital in Gastonia. B. L. Merritt has bought a lot on Ardrey hill and will at once erect thereon a residence for himself and family. L. A. Harris has acquired by purchase the residence of W. E. Whitesell, near the plant of the 'Fort Mill Mfer. Co. The r>ror>ertv changed hands one day last week. The rise in the Catawba river which was expected from the heavy rains of last week did not materialize that is, the water was not more than a foot or two above the normal stage. The Southern railway has a force of workmen engaged in repairing the water tank a hundred yards north of the freight depot. This tank was poorly constructed and has never given satisfaction. W. S. McFadden, a valued em ploye of the Charlotte Brick C ., at Grattan, was married a few days ago to Miss Annabel Lock, of Rodman, Chester county. The ceremony was performed at the home of the Rev. Mr. Lummus, in Rodman, in the presence of a few friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. McFadden are living at Grattan. W. J. Stewart is the owner of probably the finest pair of mules ever seen in this section, which he secured in a trade with n Mill Gfrr?r?lr \Tnnrlr>v The mules weigh 2,950 pounds and are to be used by Mr. Stewart on his farm south of town. They are valued at $1,000?a valuation not heretofore equaled or exceeded on a pair of work animals brought to this section. The mules were shipped here from Illinois. Plans were made Tuesday at a meeting of a number of ladies of the city for the organization of a mothers' club, whose purpose will be to cooperate with the teachers of the graded school in promoting the interests of the school. The first meeting of the club will be held in the school building on the afternoon of April 12 and it is hoped the meeting will be attended by every mother who has a boy or girl in the school. Business continues brisk with Magistrate McElhaney in marrying North Carolina couples. Saturday morning the popular magistrate married J. M. Blackwelder and'Miss Mary Kellough, both of Concord, N. C., at the home of Clyde Wolfe. His services were requisioned again Sunday morning at 4:30 o'clock by W. M. Baysinger and Miss T /^1 1 ? _ T"> __ . a__ irese v./Uip, a ivowan county, N. Smallpox has made its appearance near Lewis, a railroa station some miles south of RoctHill, in Chester county, then being: four cases of the disease in the family of Lee Weir, colored. Vaccine points have been obtained and a campaign of vaccination has been inaugu rated in the neighborhood Several years ago there was ar epidemic of smallpox in the Lewis neighborhood, but the dis ease was confined almost ex clusively to negroes. Otis J. Chafee, a native o Lancaster county who as a youtl was a student at the Fort Mil academy about 25 vears ago, diet in Aiken last Thursday. Mr Chafee was a son of the lat< Capt. N. G. B. Chafee and was a brother of Capt. Will Chafe* and Miss Rena Chafee, both o whom attended school in thi: place. He was a merchant a Langley. Mr. Chafee is pleas antly remembered by a numbe of friends in fort Mill and al regret to hear of his death. A number of Fort Mill younj men went up to Charlotte Tues day evening to attend a wrest ling match in that city.
