OLD-TIME SERENADE.
T. D. Faulkner, one of the
n?XRtfa oldest citizens, delights to
|Hf the happenings in this secjwgt
when he was a young man.

a serenade by a number
'the town's young men in 1855,
prefacing the story with the
statement that while the forms
of amusement for the boys and
girls of today are more varied, it
is doubtful whether they get
more real enjoyment out of life
than they did half a century ago.
Said he:
"Late one afternoon, in Augustv
!v&L a number of citizens
of Port mnl.'decidod tliey would
have some fdn by serenading a
few friends. W. J. Culp and
T. G. Gulp at that time conducted
a wood shop where the furnit*rcF
sto^e of Mills & Young now
:mds./ -They rigged up a twohutae?/
four-seated band wagon
fr thib occasion and about sunAwri
ithe young men who were
o compose the party of serenaers
feathered. The party was
omiEosed of B. J. Patterson,
Vn^Pulp, S. J. Faulkner and
"a Ml). Faulkner, violinists; B. F.
Powell, clarionet, and T. M.
Baxter. B flat horn; besides T. B.
Withers, J. M. White, J. M.
Faulkner, W. J. and T. G. Culp
and a man named Phillips.
" "We drove out to the cross
roads east of town and halted,
as there was a cloud rising in
the west. Some of the party
concluded that it would be wise
to have a little stimulants, for
fear of an accident. T. B. With
ers was a merchant here thep
and sold French brandy, so he
agreed to go to town and bring
hack a supply. Presently he returned
and then all was ready
for the pleasures of the evening.
"Our first stop was made at
the home of old Uncle Billy
Sizer's where we had some music,
and the old gentleman furnished
us with a decanter of choice old
spirits. Some of the party ac
cepted his hospitality and some
refused. After we left Mr.
Sizer's and had gone some distance
a prominent physician
joined our party. He never rode
with a girth to his saddle for
fear of accident. In going up,a
hill his saddle commenced to slip
and it was not long before he got
in front of the saddle, with the Result
that he lost both his saddle
and medicine bags, but fortunately
recovered them.
"Our next stop was at R. M.
