The ruling pripe for cotton on this
market today '(Wednesday) was 14
.cents.
Miss Beulah Hoagland, of Charlotte,
spent Sunday at the home of her
parents in this city.
Report has it that some of the hunters
of the township are already killing:
partridires. although the season does
not open until November 15.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Fulp returned to
Winnsboro Saturday morning after
spending several days at the home of
the former's mother in this cJty.
The closing of seven big cotton mills
in the vicinity of Spartanburg the past
week has been the cause of no little
discussion among the mill workers
here.
Mr. W. O. Kimball, who visited
Rock Hill Monday, reported that the
buyers in that city were paying 44 cents
per bushel for cotton seed. There is
said to be a seed war on between the
buyers of Reck Hill, hence the high
prices.
The remains of the late John Q.
Cousart, which were interred at Fleasant
Hill several months ago, were
taken up the past week and reinterred
iti the cemetery at this place. The
Woodmen of the World will at an early
day erect a handsome monument at the
grave of Mr. Cousart.
Fort Mill people will be interested to
know that the Belmont hotel at Chester,
conducted by Mr. N. P. Johnston
who was reared in Fort Mill, was
destroyed by fire Sunday night. Mr.
Johnston and family narrowly escaped
from the burning building.
The model home at Winthrop college
bids fair to be one of its most important
departments. Miss Carrie Hyde,
of Georgia, has it in charge. In this
department the girls are taught practical
and useful household arts, and it is
proving a valuable feature.
At its meeting in Charleston Monday,
the South Carolina Synod granted the
release of Rev. R. G. McLees, general
evangelist of the Synod, in order that
' - he might accept a call to Chatham, Va.
Friends of Mr. McLees throughout the
State will regret to learn that he has
decided to move to Virginia.
Mr. Marion B. Jennings, junior member
of the law firm of Finley & Jennings,
of Yorkville, was married Sunday
night to Mrs. Emma H. Beard, the
ceremony being performed by Rev.
O. M. Abney, of the Methodist church.
Mr. and Mrs. Jennings, it is said, will
at an early dute move to Spartanburg.
Beginning with next Wednesday, the
Southern Railway will operate a special
train between Charlotte and Columbia
on account of the State fair in the
latter city. The train is scheduled to
leave Charlotte at 5:10 a. ni. pass Fort
Mill at 5:41 and arrive at Columbia at
9:00 a. m. Returning the train will
leave Columbia at G:30 p. m. The
round trip rate from Fort Mill will be
$3.85, including a ticket to the fair
grounds.
With a view of shortening the distance
between Fort Mill and Rock Hill
by several miles, a petition will in all
probability be presented to the board
of commissioners at their meeting next
week asking that a public road be
opened from the county bridge over
Catawba river down to the new road
recently graded by Messrs. Cherry and
Whitncr, from their river places out to
Rock Hill. It is claimed that the
opening of this link of road would
shorten the distance from this place
to Rock Hill by two miles or more and
would give a splendid road from the
bridge to Rock Hill.
The work of remodeling York jail
and the placing of steel cells therein
was completed the past week and the
prisoners who have been in Chester
jail during the progress of the work
are again under the care of Sheriff
Brown. The jail has eight steel cages
with solid steel floors and ceilings, and
gratings on the sides. There are two
corridors, and they are operated by
levers from the outside, so that one or
more or all can be opened at the same
time. The entire upper floor of the
jail is laid with concrete, anu the
plumbing and sanitary arrangements
are of the best.
rif* * ? Citizens of Rock Hill are bestirring
themselves in a movement to erect a
public bridge across Catawba river near
van Wyck, connecting York and
Lancaster counties. At a meeting of
the chamber of commerce of I-Lock 11 ill
a few nights ago a committee was appointed
to get up plans for building a
system of good roads in that section of
the county near the site of the proposed
bridge and a fund was set aside to defray
the expense of the work. It is
probable that a petition willl be presented
at the next meeting of the
county commissioners asking that the
bridge be built.
Young Whitesell Loses a Foot.
Mr. W. E. Whitesell, of this city, on
Sunday morning received a telegram
from Spartanburg announcing that his
son, Ernest, had suffered the loss of
hia left foot in a railroad accident in
that city late Saturday afternoon. The
telegram gave no particulars as to how
the young man was injured, but according
to a later report lie was performing
his duties as flagman on a Southern
freight train when the accident occurred.
He was taken to a hospital in
Spartanburg and there the amputation
was made.
Young Whitesell had been flagging
on the Southern only a short time, having
resigned his position as clerk in the
I local freight ofticc only a few weeks
ago to accept a position "on the road."
Tne young man nad a strong ambition
for railroading and it is indeed unfortunate
that his hopes have thus been
blighted.
Mr. W. E. Weitcaell, who went to
Spartanburg Sunday, states that his
son is doing as well as could be expected.

Mr. McGregor's Father Dead.
Mr. J. W. McGregor, a prominent
citizen of Lilesvilie, N. C., and father
of Mr. Jas. T. McGregor of this city,
died Monday evening at 6 o'clock at
the Charlotte sanitarium after an illness
that has extended over the past
six months, the immediate cause of
his death being uraemia. The deceased
had been at the sanitorium for
nearly a month, coming up from his
home at Lilesvilie for an examination.
The physicians advised an operation,
but he never regained strength to bear
the strain. His trouble ran into
uraemia several days ago andhis family
was advised that the end was only a
matter of a short while.
Mr. McGregor was 68 years of age
and was an influential citizen of Liles;
ville, having at one time been sheriff
of Anson county. He was popular all
over the county and nun.oered many
friends among the people of his section.
The body was taken to his late home
on an early train Tuesday and the
burial was made at Lilesvilie.
Fanners Content With Present Prices.
The price which cotton is now bringi
ir.g is enriching to the farmers but hard
on the manufacturers and it looks as if
the wheels of many mills would stop
I turning for a while or until a time
i when the price of the finished material
> runs up to that point where the manu
facturers can make a fair profit on
j their investments.
The farmers in the main are well
; content with the mark to which cotton
has gone within recent days, but some
j are expecting the goal of their ami
bitions to be reached in the course of a
few weeks at best. Fifteen cents is
considered the high mark for the product
; and the continued strength of the market
coupled with the continued reports
; of poor crops indicates to the minds of
i the producers that 15 cents will be
j offered soon.
Burglars Again Visit Van Wyck.
The store of the Massey-Hyatt company
at Van Wyck, a village just ever
the Lancaster county line from this
Elace, was the scene of an attempted
urglary Sunday morning about 2
o'clock. The would-bc thief was trying
to effect an entrance throuch a back
j window when he was fired upon by a
' party concealed on the inside, but the
shot went wild nnd the unknown party
made his escape. Policeman Christen- j
bury of Charlotte was phoned for and
arrived on the scene about 9 o'clock.
Bloodhounds were placed on the fugitive's
trail, which they followed for a
few miles with varying success, crossing
the Southern's railroad bridge near
Springdale and running up to Catawba
Junction. The fleeing party was not
i caught, however.
It was only a few days ago, at the
| present term of court, that a negro was
I tried and convicted of robbing the
same store, two others tried at the
! same time being acquitted. The store
was again broken into last Sunday
night one week ago, and the building
j has been guarded every night since.
Mill People Prosperous.
Conditions anions the people who
; work in the cotton mills of the South
are much bettor than when they lived
on farms, was the gist of reports made
' at the session of the home mission
; conference of the Methodist Episcopal
church, south, at Charlotte last week.
Reports containing a careful analysis
; of the present conditions of mill em!
ployos were made by a representative
of the board of missions of each of the
districts of the five Southern States
j represented.
