A Tragedy at Griffith.
i The Charlotte Observer of
Monday morning told in part as
: follows of a killing, the victim
! of which and his slayer are doubt;
less known to a number of our
i readers:
1 A young white man by the
name of Stephenson, supposed
j to be M. J. Stephenson, fcrmerlv
of Fort Mill, S. C.. was killed
, near Griffiths, four miles south
' of Charlotte, last niirht a few
minutes before 8 o'clock. J. T. E.
j Kimball, an employe of the Queen
; City Brick Works, is said to bo
his slayer, he having1 admitted
1 as much to Mr. Oscar Hunter,
his employer, and to sheriff N. j
! W. Wallace, who arrested him.
While nothing definite is known
as to the trouble which arose;
between the two men, Kimball's j
! wife is said to have figured in it.
When placed under arrest last
night shortly after the homicide,
; Kimball refused to talk, saying
that he would keep his mouth
shut until he had consulted with
his attorneys. About ten o'clock
he was brought into the city and j
lodged in the county jail.
The killing occurred in the "big
road" near Griffiths a few mini
tites before 8 o'clock. Stephenson
had hired a horse and buggy
from Wadsworth's early in the
morning and had driven down
i to his old home near Fort Mill, I
IS. C., to visit relatives. He
j called an the stable very early.
oetvveen o una b.ouo ciock. i\ir.
Sam Ross, who was in charge, 1
i refused to accommodate him j
until Mr. A. N. Deaton came up.
i To an Observer reporter last
night Mr. Ross stated that
; Stephfedson was "talking loud" j
(and seemed to be slightly under
; the influence of liquor. Mr. DeaI
ton arrived shortly after, and
l knowing him, let him have the
i horse and buggy. Steonenson
| was next seen by Mr. Will Brissic
! shortly after 5.30 near Pineville. j
: He was then on his way home, j
i The killing took place about
1 two hours later at a point 300,
j yards on this side of Kimball's !
1 house. As he passed, it is not j
| known that he stopped. It is
hardly probable that he did, for
| there were no tracks to indicate
it.
A later report says:
That Stephenson, or Stinson.
! as he was called, attempted to
i assault Mrs. J. T. Kimball,
l whose husband slew him, was
1 brought out at the inquest into
(the tragedy Monday afternoon.
I According to Mrs. Kimball's
! story, Stinson got out of his
buggy, came into her house
while her husband was a few
hundred yards away at a ncigh:
bor's and attempted to assault
her. She fought and screamed
and in a moment her husband
j was hastening to her aid.
Stinson saw him, fled from the
i house, entered his buggy and
started toward Charlotte. Kim|
ball, hearing his wife's story,:
seized his gun, followed Stinson,
I attacked and killed him.
The Kimballs are from Rock
Hill, and bear an excellent reputa- j
tion. Kimball has employed coun- |
sel and the "unwritten law" will
be pleaded in his defense.
Stephenson, the dead man, so
far as The Times has been able i
to learn, was a son of James |
Stephenson, known here as .Jim
Stinson, and who some years ago
paid occasional visits to Fort Mill
; for the purpose of selling beef
I from hi3 wagon.
