Matthew Fortner, a native of Pickens county, and who has been a student in Furman University, will have to face a1 court-martial for desert ion from the United States navy. Four years ago he left the training ship Lancaster, then at Hampton Roads and since that time he has ! lived quietly, never at a ureal ; distance from his old home. When he enlisted in the navy for a term of years, he did so in order to secure some funds to aid him in securing an education. He says that he soon became disgusted with the life on account ; of the low moral tone and be- j cause ho did not find conditions | as idea! a.s has boon pictured to] him. When the opportunity came, he left, nor has he ever denied that he deserted. Fortner is intensely religious and has been liscensed to preach, lie is well thought of by the students and faculty of Furman and numbers of friends have interested themselves in his behalf. Though he has been in this county and in Pickens during almost the entire four years since his desertion, he was not arrested until a few days ago. Upon the close of the school term he secured temporary employment in one of the local stores and it was then that he was recognized and arrested. -* *; tt. J&S 'si.:JUf iii '.if. ..LaA* ...
