SHORT ITEMS of I a Important Events of the Week Be Mr W. H. Stewart, of Ilock Hill, speu t h few hours here Saturday. Mr. L. J. Mnssey left Monday night for the Northern tuarketH. Mies Mary Ardrey is visiting he r sister, Mrs. W. A. Watson, of .Charlotte. Mrs. John Husband, of Chester, | ,..?o a, vieuur ouumiay at tlie home of her parents in this place. Miss Bulow Wilson arrived Monday evening from Charlotte and will spend some days with lier sister Mrs. L. J. Mussey. Mrs. H. E. Kodgers has been seriously ill at her home in Sprattville from the effects a paralytic stroke which she suffered on Friday. Mr. John Husband, formerly of tins place, has accepted the position of baggage master on the "Chester Swing." Mr. and Mrs. Husband are now residing in Chester. "Betsy Hamilton" will appear nt the town hail Friday evening at 8 o'clock for the benelit of the local Home Missionary and Civic Improvement clubs. A good crowd will doubtless be present tg hear this celebra'^d entertainer. The time in which new applications for Confederate pensions can lie made has expired, and the county board has forwarded its lists to Columbia. The pension money ought to be forthcoming within the uext month or six weeks. Messrs. B. F. Mussey, of Lower Fort Mill, and Jas. Howie, of Belair, have tor some weeks been supplying the local market with lumber from a big saw mill ou the latter's plantation. Mr. \V. B. Hoke of this pluce, is the sawyer for the firm. Mr. John M. Harris, one of Pleasant Valley's most progressive farmers, was in town Monday offering for sale a ton of pea-vine hay and a lb-months-old yearling. A buyer was so m found and the product! netted the owner $42.00. Mr. iluriissuys this beats 11 cent cotton. If you are not a subscriber to The Times and receive a copy of the paper stamped ''sample copy" it is an invitation for you to become a subscriber. We are giving the people the news of Fort Mill and surrounding country, and you should not miss the weekly visits of The Times. Gov. Hey ward has signed the bill changing the bird laws of the State. The open seasiou is now under the new law, from Nov. 15 to March 1. instead of from N.iv 1 to April 1, thuscutting off 15 days of November at the start of the season and the whole of March at the end. The tax collections this year amounted to about $108,000 the largest sum ever collected in York couuty in one year and only ahuot $3,500 less than the regular books calls for. There are fewer delinquents this year than usual. Treasurer Neely is busy getting things in rhape for Sheriff Brown. The li< ick Ilill Record says it is rumored mat the Southern Bower Co. has bought the water powers of the Whitney Reduction and Power Co. on the Narrows of the Yadkin liver. These powers are valued at $10,000,000. The Southern Power Co. officials say they will be ready January L next to deliver power from their plant at Catawba Falls. The Fort Mill Light Infantry will on Friday night commence its twice-a-week drills, preparatory to the annual inspecton which will be held on April 20th this year. The base-ball ground near the bead of Main street will bo cleared of all rubbish and lighted by electricity and will be used as a drill ground* The no in pay is iu excellent shape and there is every promise of its passing a creditable inspection. One of the most enjoyable events of the season was the banquet given the Daughters of the Coir* federacy by the local camp of veterans last {Saturday at the town hall. Besides the very sumptuous dinner that was spread, there were several addresses ami responses by tlie veteians and daughters, and nil present spent the two hours in a most pleasant manner. Mr. Jno. W. Elms, who had his leg broken in an accident at Catawba Falls about six weeks ago, is recovering as rapidly as could be expected, and is now able to get about with the aid of crutchts. Mrs. Elms, who has been with her liusband since he was injured, will return to her home here this week. Mr. Elms, it is thought, will be able to return home in two or thpee weeks. -OCAL INTEREST. inched For Busy Times Readers. The Southern Power Company is arranging to furnish the *" * ' in and around Gastouia with electric power. The power will be brought from their new station at Great Falls, via the old Catfiwba Station, near Fort Mill and Clover through Gaston iu on to Belumut nod Lowell. The main transmission line will be built of steel towers and will be much in advance of the present system of wood pole lines, inasmuch as they will be designed to withstand wind pressure up to a hundred miles per hour, and the most severe sleet storms ex pel ienced in this country. As was expected by a number of our citizens, the ceumnt paving along Main street which has been in use but little more than two mouths is beginning to show the defective manner iu which it was put down. At placet, along the street the paving seems to hav< little foundation and ' numerous cracks are visible, while a portion on the south side, which was laid during a freeze, is scaling off and is anything but neat in appearance. This ami the fact that puddles of water stand on the pavements in rainy weather, goes to prove that the party by whom the cement was put dowu was not up to his line of work. The commercial club met Monday night in the Masonic hall and transacted a number of important business matters, among which was the appointing of sev? ral standing committees, the acceptance of the second door of tiie new Ardrey building as the club quarters, and the election of thirteen new members. The club new has a membership of 37, and the prospects for its success are quite encouraging. The club rooms iu the Ardrey building are Hearing completion and it is expected that the club will be "at home11 to its members and visitors within two or three weeks. For Improved Light Service. It will be gratifying news to the residents and public generally to know that the council has taken steps to have all the principal streets of the town lighted by electricity. By way of experiment, the Main street was several months ago lighted by a number of ldand 32 candle power incandescent lamps, and now that these have proven satisfactory, council has decided to extend the lights to other streets. There is, however, a slight difference over prices offered the Electric Company by the council for the lighting, and it will perhaps be several weeks before the lights will have been erected and ready for use on the residence streets. The purpose of the council is to swing a light over the center of the street at the following places: On Booth street at MeEluaney's stable, at the Withers corner, at the Downs corner; on Confederate street, at Barber's corner and at Baptist church corner; on Clebourn street, at Grid's corner; on White street, at White's corner, at Link's residence, and at railroad crossing; in Spattville, nt cotton ware-house and at Pearson corner, and a light at roar of depot, one at Millfort Mill, and one near the I f nr * m >uii? ui w. a. Fisher on street. To those who are familiar with the above points, it will be seen that the lights will be considerably scattered, and the question with the electric people is whether the the price offered by the council would be a fair percentage on the out-lay of cash necessary for the erection of the lights over such a wide range of territory. It is to be hoped, however that an agreement satisfactory to both parties will soon lie reached, and that the lights will be up and ready for use in a short time.
