Fifty yen re ago the Onmhn. the Kansas City, the Seattle, the Los Angeles of today were only misty tlrenins of the few who dared to look to the future with faith. Newspapers which publish the results of church euchre parties where prizes are given away may hereafter he excluded from the mails by an order from the postmaster general. This is to apply o;dy to such affairs as charge uti admission fee. Some discontented ones will tell yon, young insn, that the more labor sav lag devices human intelligence produces trie smaller your ^bailees are for success. This is the dismal complaint of the shortsighted, small-soulod pessnuist. Beware of him. The internal revenue commission lias made a ruling that is likely to cut out the mail orde~ whiskey trade. It decides that a dealer is privileged to sell only where he pays the tax and that he cannot consign goods to various places on 0. (>. 1). oidere, A Philadelphia paper has gathered statistics which show that woman's chances to marry between I llP iitri^u f\f unrl 9i" ii pa *0 f.?" ? ?>' '" ? " ? i'?-? cent, while between 25 and 30 the chances in her favor are only 18 percent. Apparently it is rather dangerous to say no to the tiist man. A clergyman asserts that a man who receives more than $25,000 fmlary is a thief. It was Senator lien Wade of Ohio who said twenty yoars ago that no honest man could accumulate more than $50,000 in a lifetime. To both imputations the country editor will plead "not guilty." Detroit, Michigan, enjoys the distinction as a drug center. An immense laboratory in that city has a frontage along the river of some seven hundred and fifty feet and covers more than fourteen acres of laud. In this big pharmacy are employed two thousand people busy manufacturing various kinds of remedies for the many ills of which the flesh s heir to. There is one man who always deserves your sympathy and help; that is tho poor man unskilled as to a trade or profession, who is honestly and laboriously trying to feed and clothe a large family. If you can give such a man work, do so; if he works for you, pay him fair wages and do not make him wait for Iiih money. No mure ne rioua problem confronts any man than liow to feed, clothe and educate a family of live or more children on average daily earnings of Jess than a dollar a day. The late Judge Andrew Wylie of Virginia had a happy gift of illustration. In 1860 the judge cast the only vote for Lincoln that waa given in Alexandria. In an address on Lincoln ho once illustrated in an odd way the power of pereerverance. "Lincoln persevered," he said, "and it is only those who persevere, those who Concentrate their energies, who succeed. Don't give three years to journalism and then, discouraged, try the law awhile. Don't learn the grocery business and in a little while take up placet* mining or plumbing Consider, rather, the postage stamp, whose usefulness depends entiiely on its ability to stick to one thing until it gels there." One of 1 li*? New York papers is Seandalized by the die cowry that the United States canal commission is shipping to Panama, by way of "supplies" for the excavators, twenty dozen ladies' ui_rl>trobes, twenty dozen dress sliiitw, six dozen suit cases, a case of five nVloce tea sets and thirty work tables for lades. Some <>f the ji-KXls were bought, the buyer for the canal commitaioii is said to have admitted, with some of the Sfifl.OOO.UOO expended on the canal to date. The iden is that nothing is too good for the men who will finish the big ditch?say within ; twenty or thirty years. Hut what he diggers want with five o'clo.k I' a sets, diess suits or the night- i . -tbes is not cx^lttigecl. I Dealers Must Pay License Within the next few weeks the druggists of this State handling certain grades of patent medicines will have to takeout internal revenue luvni-e as retail liquor deal eu?, says The State. The order issued by the commissioner of internal revenue at Washington several mouths ago stated that the manufacturers of certain pitent medicines would he liable for a wholesale revenue license and all the druggists handling these brands would be liable for the $25 retail license because the medicines contained a certain percentage of alcohol. The time for pay meiitof the retail tax was extend -d to April 1. 1006. and already the revenue depurtmont here is beginning to receive inquiries about it. It is expected that the order issued will be amended so that a number of othor medicines will be included. Itisstuted that this it: not intended as a reflection on these medicines, but as they contain the percentage of ulcoho! liable for tax the rule must be en forced. There are no makers ol patent medicine in this Statt liable lor the wholesale tax, but all of the druggists handling these medicines mentioned in tin order sent out by Com mission' er Yerkes are liable for the retail .tax. The circular sent out extend ing the time fur the payment ol this tax is in part as follows: "Bj reason of the care given in making analysis of these compounds tin office has been unable to compleU the examination of all such com pounds now upon the markot However, it has made analysis ol the following preparations and finds that they are within the ternu of the ruling of September 12 1905: At wood's La Grippe Specific Cuban Gingeric, De Witt's Stom acli Bitters. Dr. Bouvier's Bucliu Gin, Dr. Fowler's Meat and Malt. Duffy's Malt vliiskey, Gilbert^ Rejuvenating Iron and Herb .1 uice Hosteller's Stomach Bitters, Kudros, Peruna, Rockaudy Cough Cure." A Lost Boy. The editor of The Times ia in receipt of a request to publish an an article concerning the little son of Dr. E. L. Byers, of iSeeley ville, lud., who was stolen from hlis home in May, 1(J05, and but for lack of space we would cheerfull} publish the entire article. Dr. Byers and wife, who are described as being heart-broken, have spent their entire resources in search for their only child, and now ask the meuibei-6 of the press to come to their assistance. The boy, Richmond Byers, if alive, was 6 years old last July, is of light complexion, has gray eyes, left noticeably crossed, has a small V shaped nick in the edge of the loft ear, has a sharp chin and narrow, projecting forehead. He is rather small for his age and is unusually bright and intelligent, talking nfter the tnauner of a boy much older. There is h standing reward of $500, awaiting any information that will lead to the boy's recovery. One of the greatest railway men in the world baa predicted that within twenty years the steam locomotive will be found only in museums, and that its place will be supplied by the electric motor propelling trains across the continent at the rale of sevety-tive miles an hour. Such a possibility as this illustrates the astonishing rapid rate of developments in which tiie mechanical world is progressing. The nineteenth century was the age of steam; the twentieth century is to be emphatically the age of electricity, which is already apparent throughout New England and the ^outh. No one can safelv nr 'diet iho r* """ *MV limits to which electrical development will proceed, but it in safe to say tlinf at the end of thin century condition* of life upon thin globe will be wonderfully changed from those which now exist, by reason of the increasing ability of man to control this mystetious but marvelous force to his advantage. It was considered a labor-saving device to build the steamship, but the steamship lias brought the whole world into lour very close and compact oornors It was considered a labor saving device to build the locomotive, but the locomotive takes you to the open plains, the fertile valleys and the gold-lined mountain sides, so you can reach the harvests of the Almighty, which had you relied on your tired leg*, never could have been gaiued.
