V 1 C. 1/1/iC rrjnmiflM J.-J, iwn. . . . u J y The present session of the login latum hus distinguished itself iu one particulur, tit least; that of abusing Sena/ tor Tillmau. Scarcely has aspeech been made, iu opposition to the dispeueary that the senator Uaa not cotne iu for a big share of the blame for the rottenness of the system, wheu, as a matter of fact, he is in no way responsible for the present imuiilled-up affairs of the dispensary. In iutroduciug the dispellMiry law, Senator Tillman saw iu it redemption from the ultomiuable condii ions of opeu barrooms and hail the affairs of the system been administered us he conscientiously believed that they wou'd lie, it would ltave effected a great improvement over the former law. lint to see a crowd of snido lawyeis and other insignificant politicians got together in the absence of the senator and heap bushels of fault and upbraid him for conditions for which ho i? unaccountable, is extremely disgusting. Jt would likely cause little surprise should some of these soft-head Tillman^ dispensary fighters attempt to conuect t lie senator with the recently discovered dispensary label fraud, if such it was. Senator Tillman has promised, however, to be on hand in the campaign next oiimmor and if these two-by-four spoolmen of the small-fry don't take to the tall timbers and drag the liolo in behind them, we miss our guess. In a si'kkch Friday on the subject of the dispensary Mr. Brico attacked Senator Tillman in the most violent manner. In the course of his speech decrying the evils of the dispensary, Souator Brico referred to the senior senator as "this luminary in Washington," and said that he ''has done more harm % thousand times than the barkeopera of Charleston. Instead of weeping hypocritical tears over uu insult offered u woman from Indiana and instead of pouring out vitroil on the head of the president of the United States because of a recalled iuvitution, the creator of the dispensary hud better bo iu South Carolina to weep over Ijis dirty, degpicable, damnable brat." Cuu one believe that such vile language was employed by the meekly Br ice. How unlike the man! "Dirty, despicable, damnable!" What a contrast tchthe attitude and utterances of the York sonator who, at the Tirzall meeting last summer, is said to have sat culmnly by and with distended nostrils, ears wide open and lips tightly clinched, silently patted bis foot to the tune of Senator Tillman's arraigunteut of the Brice Act and its author. . Thk Southern cotton farmer is now face to face with a proposition which means the future prosperity or everlasting ruin of his cfiiof industry. The the spinner and speculator reeiug the position of the farmer is putting him to a thorough test by holding the price of the staple 111 the neighborhood of 11 cents. Duokily, the farmer also soejnB to realize his jxjsitiou and is holding on with bnlUdog tenacity. He says that liis cotton is worth 15 cents aud it determined to swing to it till that price is reached The speculator with ttye trillions vows that the staple shall not reach that figure, and thus the hattle rages. The t'armur has the advuutuge and slum hi hold tight. Once he mirreurondevs. a future of poverty and hard labor stares him iu the face. Thk htphkm& court of the United Status, iu common with the opinion of the general public, has douided that .lohuutt Hooh is worthless to society, church and Mate and has refused to iu* terforo in his sentence of death. Hoch, the man of many wives, will on tomorrow pay the penalty for his crimes. Although a number of counties have voted out the dispensary system under the brine Aot, this law does uot appear to be just exactly what the people want and is about to be shaken off for something better. So much for the adage that "every dog has his flay." x iik L.Koisi,\irKB winds up its 1006 session Saturday, In looking over the records one finds tlmt the important hills which it lias failed to puss are more numerous than those passed. It is claimed that at the stockyards, the puckers use evcrv part of the animal but the squeal. They appear to have a place to utilise even that now that they are on trial. Some moii who would raise old harry if the dog was missing at night, are not at nil concerned as to where their children may be. Curious situation, isn't it? Rkttkk pay your lWft taxes this month with the 2 iter cent penalty than allow , them to rnu over into March, when a penalty of 7 per cent attaches. Says the groaud?hog to tho woather man: "I may be oraxy, but I ain't no tuoi." Aud the proof is at luuul. PnBj'-y i Did yon ever think to look over a lint of the an married men of y oar acquaintance, and eee how many of them are really able to support a wife, and the consequent family? This is spoken more particularly of the townsmen and not of the farmer, who is a king unto himself. The result of such an investigation would probably startle you immensely. Not one young man in ten, bused ou a very conservative estimate, \s more than able to take care of himself or has acquired any property whatever or laid up a penny for the married emergency. Thoy are depending ov something to taru op that vrill relieve tkom of each responsibility, or believe iu the old yet continued adage that two can live as cheap ait one. They marry Home addolpated love-nick girl and trust to lack to briug tlieiu out of the pit that they have voluntarily dug for themselves. The result is either a divorce or a continual struggle with the gaunt wolf of poverty, while the winged dove of love that tbiuks in its youthful wisdom that life is livable on kisses flies out of the home to torment into a repetition the error of some other young couple. She .offspring go to help congest our courts and increase our criminal lists, if every youug man could be brought to *co that provision for a family is oue of the first prerequisities of such a stop, the world would soon reach that much sought for millcuium, that happy conception wheu every man has attained the acme of greatness?the wisdom of 40 at the age of 20. The ?ROI8I.a.turk recently passed a law providing for a fine of $5 to $10 for each sale agniust poddlers or venders of mediciues who have not paid a county license of $600. This was done to protect the people against dangerous curealls offored by unscrupulous dealers who are uot aware of the character of the medicine they soli. There are sovoral agents iu'Fort Mill and sorxonndiug country this law will affect. Anothor class of peddler who could be dispensed with to the benefit of the public is he who visits the towns and from a goods box delivers a lengthy talk on the merits of his trinkets, tooth powder, soap, corn oure or electric belt. We have never soeu an article sold in this manner tljat was worth the material iu which it was wrapped, and not only is it a fruuxl, but such sulo is in direct competition to the merchant who is engaging iu a legitimate business, paying his tax and spending his nionoy to assist in building up the town. It is hoped that the council of Fort Mill will horeftor flatly refuse license to this class of fakirs who seek to thrust their worthless articles on our people. Once upon u time a woman who \vas a great tale bearer happened to hear one neighbor speak slightingly of another and immediately carried the words of the first to the second neighbor, claiming that, as a friend, she thought she ought to lot the second neighbor know what the first was saying. But iustend of thanking tho tale-bearer, the neighbor said: "It makes 110 differ- 1 enco to mo how many rotten eggs my neighbor has on her premises, tho person who carries tho decayed lion fruit to my house and breaks it under my nose is my enemy." A sermon iu an egshell. 1 How raauy battleship* will eventually satisfy the uuvy? was the question recently pat to a u.ivai officer at Washington. "Seventy," was the answer, and the necessary disposition of 72 buttleships was detailod us la on the Atlantic coast, 21 on the Gulf of Mexico ( and Caribbean Sea, 1(1 on tho Pacific coast, and 16 in tho Philippines. Seventy battleships would cost at prevailing figures about $350,000,000, more rather than leas. ( The attention of tlio town authorities is called to the practice some people make of driving across tho pavements on main street at other than regular crossing places. It is impossible to keip the curbing intact and the street decent so long us this practice is allowed. Can it hk thut"lSenator Brieo hopes to gain favor by his insinuating refereronco to the actiou of Seuator Tillman in resenting au insult to a lady?oven if she was from Indiana? If so, he will succeed?we don't think. The oi,d veterans will bo pleased to inofuot- ?u? ?lit *- - ? ??u iiini mora win ne no ueoruaso ill the pension appropriation this year. Tho legislature has wisely decided to allow the amount for this purpose to remuin the same. Thk Timks thanks Hro. Wndo Harris of the Charlotte Chronicle for the compliment paid us through his paper a few days ago. It in our intention to make still greuior improvements iu a short time. To ACKNOWtJtDOB an error and to show n disposition to correct the same, is the course adopted by a wiso man. It is only the cnte fools and smart alecks who never make mistakes TIbad your fire insurance policy over frequently. It Is right for yon to know , and be sure jast what is required of you by the company, and what they will really do for yoa If burnt out, Stranger Met Death by Freezing. The body of Hit unknown white mini, apparently about 70 years of age, who had it whs believed been dead for several days, was found Saturday morning at a poiut about two hundred yards north of the railroad trestle over Catawba river, and about one hundred feet from tl.o ...oi u? I. I. rni. . iuc iaov urum vn i uc niiutiui. -L lit* discovety was made by a number of negro hunters, who at once notified the white residents of the vicinity. Near the spot where the body lay were several hay stacks, and in one of these the old man had evidently sous;lit shelter from the weather. It was thought that death was due to freezing, the old fellow having been clothed with only a pair of old shoes, overall trousers, jacket and hat. A search of the clothing was made with the ! result that $47.CO in cash, and an old family record were found The money was in gold, paper and silver, a small amount being found in each of the pockets. The record was almost ineligible, on acount <f its age and constant handling. In one place, however, wan plainly discernible the words "? Y. Maxwell, died Aug. 2. lHfi2." In another place could be made out. MWm. M. Maxwell, died Dec. ?." This was the only clue as to the identity of the dead man, it being supposed that his name was Maxwell, or that he was connected with a family of that name. There were no marks or other evidences that the man had met death by foul menus and an inquest was deeuied unnecessary. The body wa-? brought to town and viewed by many people, but none were able to identify the mail. It was stated, however, that several parlies had seen the stranger going along the railroad to ward the river Hboiit ten days ago. 'Phone messages were sent to the nearby towns, but no one was found who could fui nihh tiny light on the subject. The body, although badly decomposed, was held until Sunday afternoon, when it was buried in the town cenietary. It is doubtful if the identity of the man will ever be established.
