In accordance with orders from Washington, postotlices throughout the country will hereafter give closer attention to packages that the government. may not be defrauded out of the proper postage. It hue been discovered that a considerable quantity of mail is sent throuuh the post offices at a lower rate than is proscribed, and the orders have in consequence been issued from Washington, directing closer attention to mail. The engagement of Miss Ethel Hudson and Mr. Sid Grier, both of Providence township, has been been announced, the wedding to take place in January. Miss IIudson is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs It. A. Hudson, one of the largest planters in the low er section oi the county. Mr. Grier in h son of Mr. and Mrs. J. iS. Grier, of Matthews, and is himself a prominent young farmer of the county.? Charlotte Observer. In spito of the very inclement weather which interfered somewhat with the bazarr, the ladies of the Home Missionary society realized sixty-odd dollars on last Friday. All of the delicious cake, pattdy and supper, including oysters were sold, and only a f?w pieces of fancy work remained. The ladies have been very generally complimented upon the beautiful decoration or the hall and the three principal booths. Sutton , vs. the Catnwba Power Company, which hmr been in the courts of this comity for the past several years, was again before the court ( during the past week and was concluded Wednesday morning with ! a verdict for the plaintiff in the j sum of $1,500. i This suit, it will be remembered. Wi.s brought by Mrs. Sutton to "recover damages in the sutn of $10,000 from the power company for damage to her land on CatawI ba river in May .1901, the plaintiff claiming that the river had been diverted ftom its channel and thrown on her land thins causing the damage. On the first trial of the case the jury found for the plaintiff in the sum of S(ilH). On the second trial the verdict was j for $1,000 and on the third it was for $1,500.
