W, Holland of Atlanta, are conducting a protracted meet- j inqj this week in the Presbyterian , church at Wnxhaw. There were many visitors from ] this section to the Stale fair iu , j Columbia last week and all pro- ! i nouneed it the ureatest success in i the history of this useful organization. The exhibits were larger j and of a bettor variety than ever j and the crowds of visitors to the j city were far ahead of those of1 ! lormer years, Hih success of the I fair was due largely to the seh?*d- j nles of the trains, it being possible j ! f. c one to g<? to the oity at almost ' any hour of the day anil return at ; j pleasure. People- returning to this p'nee I Wednesday evening from Char- i j lotte told of a disastrous tire which : started in Coclilane's livery stable i i ill that city at 2 o'clock in the af- j ternoon, destroying property to the j J extent of $50,000. Ha'f a block on j | College street, between Fast Trade j and Fifth streets, was practically , | burned up. Twenty horses, most ! j of them belonging to out of town ' ; parties attending the Mecklenburg : fa*r, were burned to death. A stiff wind was blowing and the lire depart ment got the tire under control with ditliculty. The losses ! were partially covered by insui- t ance. Mr. -las. T. At the Hiiiuiuer school at ; ClenisOM college nearly 300 teach; ers signed an agreement to do j | something for tp,. iinproveinent of' ,' the rural schools, and their efforts : will probably be directed towards j ; making Arbor J)ay a success. The j gradual destruction of our forests; ! renders it very important that the j I pupils in our schools should up- i : predate the value of trees, j .The Rock Hill Record says that arrangements have been made to put northbound mail from that city on train No. lid, which connects in Charlotte with No. 28 ; I going nottli, and that mail for this train must reach the postoffiee not j later than 5.15 p. in. The Record ; num is evidently confused as to train numbers. According to our J knowledge of the trains. No. lib, | the ''Chester Swing," passes Rock ! j Hill about 2 p. in., and No. 2<s : t does not run north of Charlotte. The Record does not say whcthei mail will lie taken on and delivered I at stations between Rock 11 ill and j Charlotte. York County Druggists Organize.
