scene Saturday night of what came (
near rescuing in a tragedy, when <
John Carter, a boarder at the Dea- ,

In our 1 hht week's correspondence
there was omitted from tlit*

Col. .1. S. Newman, who is to he
the star speaker of the occasion.
Col. Newman has resinned his
position as director of the Agricultural
department at Clemson

the last tour of the State that lie
will make. We wish to emphasize
the fact that it will be detrimental
to the interests of every farmer to
neglect this opportunity of hearing
Col. Newman, beeause lie is
the one man in South Carolina
who has done more for southern
agriculture than any other man in
the State. The rest of the corps
of instructors are also very ahle
and entertaining speakers; and, in
view of the fact that a tight was
made on demean College at the
last session of the Legislature, we

He has been quite aick ainee his
arrival, but ih now convalescent.
We had a fine "ain last week;
nnd, the rain and thp recent advance
in the price of cotton liave
served to put our farmers in buoyant
spirits again. Out farmers are
nearly through "laying by," and
ere long they will be sitting under
their own vine and fig tree where
"General Green" cannot molest or
