Odessa. By Cable.?The red flag of
revolution is at the masthead of tho
KuLaz Potemkine, Russia's most powerful
battleship iu the Black Sea. which
now lies in the harbor in the hands
of mutineers.
The captain and most of the officers
were murdered and thrown overboard
in the open sea and the snip is completely
in the possession of the crew
and n few officers who have thrown
in their lot with the mutineers.
The puns of the Kniaz Potemkine
command the city, and in the streets
masses of striking workmen, who Wednesday
tied before the volleys of the
troops, are now inflamed liy the spectacle
of open revolt on board an Imperial
warship and are making a bold
front against the military.
All day long firing lias been heard
in many quarters of tho city. A numI
her of harracades have been erected,
and tumuli and disorder reign.
EXPECT A CIVIL SEA FIGHT.
The main squadron of the Black Sea
1 fleet, consisting of the battleships Georgei
Pohiedonosetz (George the Victorious).
Til Sviatitclia Rostivlnv and
Ekaterina II. with two cruisers, are
expect"'' in .nrrive here and a regular
naval battle is in prospect.
The rioters are in a most defiant
mood and are not inclined to surrender
without fighting.
Reports of the mutiny which occurred
while the battlesnln >vj?? ? ?
arc difficult to obtain, as the mutineers
refuse to allow communication with the
shore; hut. it is ascertained that it
arose front the shooting; of n sailor
who was presenting;, in behalf of the
crew, a complaint against had food.
According to one version, this sailor,
whose name was Omiltchuk. objected
to the quality of the "borehth." or
soup, and was immediately shot down
by a mess officer.
HEC,INNING OP MUTINY.
The crew then rose and seized the j
ship and officers, eight of whom were
spared on the condition that they
would join the mutineers. The others
were killed and their bodies thrown
overboard. After a period of vaeilla-.
tion, the Kniaz Potemkine headed for
Odessa and arrived hero last Wednesday
night, accompanied by two torpedo
boats. Early Thursday the liody of
Omiltchuk was brought ashore in one
of the battleships boats, and was landed
on the new mole, where It was exposed
in semi-state all day. It wn?
visited by thousands of persons, many
of whom placed coins in the basket
at (lie head of the body towards a
fund to defray the cost of the funeral
which the sailors propose to hold and
which the strikers will make the occasion
of a great demonstration.
An inscription on the breast of the

he presented a just complaint of

ProUu o? tue k'uc'keii.
There has been a great ueal of disappointment
because the Gnrtleld report
shows that the profits of the packing
industry only amount to about two
per cent, on the volume of business
transacted. There Is no doubt, however.
that the report is correct.
The census reports compiled by the
Government in lftOO, before the agitation
regarding the "beef trust" began,
throw considerable light on thiR question.
It apix'ars from the census that
the packing industry is conducted on a
sum 1 lor margin of gross prollt than any
other industry in Ant or lea. The gross
margin of profit of 871 flour and grist
mills in Illinois, in the census year,
was nearly seven per cent, on the volume
of business. The gross margin of
fifty-one wholesale slaughtering and
meat packing establishments in Illinois
was only about one-third as large, or a
little more than two per cent, on the
volume of business.
The millers have not l>eeu accused
of being in a "trust," and combinations
would scetn impossible in a business
where there arc several thousand
mills in the United States competing
actively for the flour trade, hut it ap-.
pears that the gross profits of the millers
are larger than the gross profits of
the packers. It may turn out that the
agitation regarding the packing industry
will show the same result as the
devil found in shearing the pig: "All
squeal and no wool."
Why
Why. v. hen buying a hook, are we in.
fluenccd bv the author's name? Why by
an artist's if we purchase a picture?
Why <lo wise buyers insist upon having
a reliable name on nearly everything they
purchase?
It is because the name attached is the
| safeguard ot the buyer ? a protection
agniast the palming on of inferior articles.
This "name guarantee" wo all look for 111
the most important things we buy, and
what can be more important than our
food ?
Kveryliody knows that all intelligent
housekeepers are very particular nliout the
buying oi things to eat and drink, and nobody
realizes it more than the up-to-date
grocer. ?ho caters to the wants ot his customers.
For instance every real grocer knows
the reason lor the universal popularity ot
Lion (.'oki-f.k, the leader ol all package
coffees, lie knows that its uniform purity
and high iiu.ihty have made it welcome 111
millions of American homes for over a
quarter of a century.
Realizing this he eannot hut hand it out
cheerfully when asked for it. He knows
that the people accept tho package as a
guarantee ot the eontents.
) et there may he a few grocers left who
| do not M'rognize that the buyer?not the
seller lias the right of choice, and they
j may want to sell their loose coffee (who |
knows what- it is. or where it came front?)
instead of l.K>N < "oKFKK, which the eltstcine:
asks for, and the merits of which
both know.
In such cases the wisest advice ia:
"I'll uige your denier."
How to Dose a Dog.
(In July Outing.)
A dose of castor oil is as disagreeable
to the ailing dog as it is to the
ailing human being, lie kicks against
ii. and does right. when he is grab
bed by i he back of I he neck, and with
his jaws yanked apart with a towel
awaits the nasty dose. This is poured
down his neck?on the outside,
it is usually followed by a few more
doses, all of which go the same way
?which is the wrong way. The jaws
are in a vise, the dog is in torture,
and be is ready to condemn his very
best friend for thus treating him shabbily.
If tliey were only sensible
enough to know how any dog. from
the meanest cur to the bluest-blooded
canine on earth was in the habit
of taking his oil, it would be different.
Hut they are all at sea on the subject.
and poor doggie is about dead
when a friend utters:
'Humph! All chumps on dogs. 1
sec. Pour the stuff over the fellow's
paws.'
I.o, and behold! The wise few who
thought thoy knew all about dogs and
dogs tilings learned something to
their credit, when they saw how carefully
Towser licked his paws, cleaned
them and thus took his oil without
fuss ami in the proper way.
A girl's idea of a romance is a man
