Curious Facts About Bablsts.
At a recent meeting of the Imperial
Geographical society a* Weadlkawkas,
Russia, the explorer Arakelyanl made
Borne interesting statements about the
religious sect of the Bablsts. This
Mohammedan organization was founded
in 1844 by the Persian Mlrsa All
Mohaired, and now numbers about
5.000,0c0 members. According to the
"Bejan"?the Koran of this sect?all
men are brethren, and should speak
and write the same language. The
year is divided into nineteen months
and nineteen days, of which the latter
Ave are devoted to repentance. Of
those 5,000,000 members, over 3,000,300
live in Persia, where they have
b^ an allowed to build their own
churches, while the remainder is
spread over Egypt. Arabia, Turkestan
and even China. The present head of
the sect is Abbas-Effendi, who resides
in Persia. The founder of the organization.
Mirsa Ali Mohamed, was killed
in Persia some three years ago.

Every once in a while a wave ol

Marquette, Wis., Special.?When

ruesday it was known that 2G lives had
aeon lost in the tornado that wrecked
part of Marquette early and did much
damage in this vicinity. Of the injured
>0 were seriously hurt, and some of
:hem may die. Several of the others
ire suffering from broken limbs and

Tuesday night order had practically
been brought nut of the chaotic condition
that prevailed and a relief committee
had begun dispensing aid.
Among the relief sent from outside

I TRONADO 101) YARDS WIDE.
The tornado struck the southern end
i of the town and cut a clean swath 100
yards in width through its entire
i length. Coming as it did at midnight.
I ill the people were caught without a
moment's warning. A heavy rain storm
had preceded the wind. When daylight
broke over the town it found the entire
population in a state of panic.
Business was entirely suspended and
every one who escaped injury turned
his attention toward aiding the
wounded.
The tornado seems to have formed
three miles south of Marquette and did
not spend its force until it had passed
many miles north of the town. In Marinette
the residence portion west of the
Main street suffered the principal damage.
The houses in the course of the
tornado were al1. with two or three exceptions.
completely wrecked. In this
section there were a number of modern
residences, of which only one was left
standing. The Swedish Lutheran and
Methodist churches were among the
first buildings struck an l they, together
with the parsouage adjoining the Methodist
church, were demolished.
Monday afternoon was hot and oppressive.
l.ate in the evening a terrific
rain broke over the town. The rain

when the tornado struck. Within
less than five minutes it had wrought
its terrible work anil passed on. Telegranh

of the plight of the city.
It was not until 8 o'clock that physicians
and surgeons began arriving from
surrouding towns. In the meantime
dozens of volunteers set to work to
clear away the debris and extricate the
dead and injured. The Swedish Lutheran
parsonage and several private
residences were turned into temporary
hospitals. The dead were taken to a
store room near by.
NARROW ESCAPES.
Dr. Lund, the Lutheran pastor,
passed about among the suffering, ministering
to their comfort, while thirty
or forty other persons, working under
his direction, cared for the injured at
other points.
There were many narrow escapes
from death. The infant daughter of
Chas. Sailon was lifted in her bed and
, carried to the middle of the strePt. re
ceiving only a few scratches. Sailon
I and his wife were seriously injured,
f The mattress upon which the baby
daughter of the Rev. Smith lay was
doubled up in such a manner as to
cover the child and protect it from falling
timbers. In spite of the destruction
of the Smith house, tlie entire family
escaped uninjured. Mr. and Mrs. O. 8
Ellvin were carried on their bed a distance
of 500 feet and laid down without
being seriously injured.

Making railroad rates is l.ke playing
a game of checkers or chess. Communities
to be benefited, producers,
manufacturers or shippers to be aided
represent the pieces used. Every pussi
lily move is studied for its effect on the
genera! result by skilled tratlic managers.
A false move in the making of
freight rates may menu the ruin of u
city, of a great manufacturing interest,
of an agricultural community. Kailroads
strive to build up all these so
| that cadi may have an equal chance in
the sharp competition of business. t?o
i sensitive to this rivalry are the railroads
that in order *.o build tip business
along their Hues they frequently allow
the shipper to practically dictate rates,
ltate making has been a matter of development:
of mutual concessions for
mutual beuetil. That Is why the railrouds
of the United States have voluntarily
made freight rates so much lower
in this country than they are on the
government-owned and up-rated railways
of Europe and Australia that
they are now the lowest transportation
rates in the world.

Actual Sterility in Wome
Mothers and Children
Many women long1 for a child to bless '
their homes, but because of some debility
or displacement of the female
organs they are barren.
Preparation for healthy maternity is
accomplished by Lydia E. Pinkharn's
Vegetable Compound more successfully
than by any other medicine, because it
gives tone and strength to the entire
female organism, curing all displacements,
ulceration and inflammation.
A woman who is in good physical
condition transmits to her children the |
blessings of a good constitution. Is ;
not that an incentive to prepare for a
hcaltliv maternity ?
If expectant mothers would fortify \
themselves with Lydia E. Pinkharn's
Vegetable Compound, which for thirty !
years has sustained thousands of
women in this condition, there would i
be a great decrease in miscarriages, in I
suffering, and in disappointments at
birth.
The following letters to Mrs. Pinkham
