Mr. S. B. Menclmn", who has just
completed the installation of electric
lights in the Presbyterian |
church, is at present engnged in

Many people are of the opinion
that the raius of the past two I
weeks in this section will result in |

W. F. Jordan, white, was be- j
fore Mayor Menchnm Monday, |
charged with retuiling. Several
witnesses testified that they hail
bought whiskey from the accu- I
Bed and a tine of $25 was imposed.
The tine was paid.
Through the efforts of Capt. S.
K. White the war department at
Washington has com-ented to furnish
a number of caution and balls
to be placed in Confederate park
at this place. The halls, about 25
in number have arrived and the
cannon nro expected daily.
With the clearing of the wether,

thorough repairing and improvement.
Besides a number of rooms
to be added, other improvements
willbe mad% which will add much
to the appearance and convenience
of the residence.

Owing to a break in the transmission
lines of the Catawba Power
Company, the two cotton mills
at this place were idle Monday.
Those of our citizens who have installed
iueandeceut lamps were
without light Sunday and Monday
nights and had to result to the old
kerosene lamps.
A severe wind and rain storm
passed ovor this section Saturday
afternoon. Many trees were up.
rooted, fences blown down, and j
slight dninugo was done the truck
patches by the fall of hail which
accompanied the rani. A number
of telephone poled north of
town were shattered by lightning.
A large number of people will
loave town tomorrow to attend the
closing eyerciscs and picnic at the
Hharon school house in Mocklenburg
county. This picnic is always
among the largest held in
this section, and improves with
each year. Baseball, school exercises
and a general good time is the
program for tomorrow.
The farmers of this section have
been able to do but little farm work
during iho past ten days, owing to
the rains. The ground has been
Wetter than for several months,
and the cotton and grasss seem to
be running a race to see which
cau get the best hold on the land.

Perry Alexander, a young white
man who has been working at the j
livery stable of VV. T. Hoagland
for 3ome weeks, was convicted before

preached an eloquent and instructive
sermonfrom the Presbyterian

The tniit of D. Mack Steele vs.
the Fort Mill Mfg. Company was
called for trial in the circuit court
at. Yorkville on Wednesday.
This case grew out of Steel's having
been injured while engaged at
the mill some months ago by having
his linn 1 cut and bruised in
the cogs ot a spining frame. The
jury foutid for Steele in tLiu sum
ot $201),1(3.
Mr. David G. Stanton, a well
known citizen of Bethel township,
this county, died suddenly of
heart disease on the morning of
May 7. Air. Stanton was highly
esteemed by ull who knew him
and liis sudden death was a severe
shock to his friends. He was (31
years of ago and was for two terms

commissioners, a position which
he filled most creditably.
In the suit of Mrs. A. E. Sutton
against the Catawba Power
Company which was taken up in
the extra term of court at Yorkville
the pastweok.a continuance
was ordered. A jury had been empaneled
and a number of motions
made by the attorneys on each aide.
The suit is for damages on account
of an overflow of Catawba river
over the lands of the plaintiff in
the year 1901. This suit has been
before the court several times before.
About the condition of Mr, J. J.
Hull, the llock Hill Herald says:
"The editor, who went to Johns
Hopkins hospital in Baltimore two
weeks ago, had his condition diagnosed
upon arrival by Drs. Cole,
Howard and Oder. Their decision
was that he was suffering with
spasmodic aedema, involving the
kidneys, liver and stomach. After
remaining in the hospital ten
days the editor came back to his
home, where ho will be treated by
Dra. Crawford and Ftnnell, treatment
bein^c after direction of the
hospital experts. It is possible
that several months will be involved
in procuring recovery."
