A Movement That Hasn't Moved.
The Charlotte Observer of Wednesday
contains the following,
which will interest the people of
Port Mill: .
A citizen from Fort Mill, S. G.,
sixteen miles from Charlotte, was
in a tnlkative mood yesterday.
"There is, 1 tljjnk, a pretty substantial
movement qn foot iq Fort
Mil) to have a dispensary established
there, with the especial
yiew of cnteriiur to Charlotte trade.
\Vby not? The interstate commerce
laws sanction it uud the distance
is convenient."
"How would it do business with
Charlotte ?"
"Well, there's no lpgal objection,
I believe, to establishing an express
company running from Fori
Mill to Charlotte, and such a ootnoany
would, by thp decision of the
Supreme Court of the United
Status, have full rij*ht to deliver as
'I common carrier nil imndu ?m?.
. ^ ?- r> ?f w,f
justed to its cnre."
"How serious are yon?1'
"Entirely so, I assure you. There
je no especial sentiment against
the liquor business in Fort Mill
and if the town can do business of
that sort that will benefit it, it will
|io started, I believe."
Pipe dream, pure and pimple.
Faithful inquiry on the pai t of
The Times has failed to discover
the least effort making in the community
to establish a dispensary
jn Fort Mill. At different times
since j-he dispensary law was passed
the matter,of opening one of the
state's saloons in this place has
received consideration by a few
citizens, but the subject has never
assumed such proportions as to
occasion concern by thoqe who are
opposed to the system. The Observer's
informant is,alsovery much
mistaken in the statement that
there "is no special sentiment htraintt
the liquor business in Fort
* Mill." More than twenty years
aqo the barrooms were voted out
of the town and there has not
since been concerted action by any
appreciable number of citizens
looking to a return to the sale of
whiskey here.
Gossipping.
m . ,
The lmbit of gossipping ia destructive
t? ttie higher lite in the
soul of individuals, and has always
proved harmful to the harmony,
peace and good fpoling in those
chmohes which are afflicted with
the evil, says an exchange. Happy
is the man or woman who is
pot made the confidant of the
talebearers.
But rf one cnnnqt always escape
listening to evil reports concerning
liis neighbor, let him adopt
tin rule of n wise man. Said he:
'Wiieu I hear something bud
about someb d\ whom 1 always
ani poaed to be good, I always take
out my lead pencil and take off
twenty-five percent from the story
toi the habit of exaggeration
which belongs to the man who
r iirtrt told the story; then I take otT
twenty-live percent, from the fact
that the man may have been put
into ctrcuinstances of overpower
nig circumstances; then I take otF
tw? nty-five per cent of the additions
which the spirit of gossip in
evt ry community has put upon
the original story. So, I have
taken off seventy live per cent.
But i have not heard his side of
* *1 k story at all, ami for fids reason
I take off the remaining t>\vntyliv
i or cent, until f l^ave found
I out tor myself."
nit ninety percent of all the
f?ld in detraction of olhers
