Rockefeller, Jr., is close is well demonstrated by the following story, which is said to be absolutely true: Young Rockefeller wanted a safe for his wife's jewelry, and he wrote to a well-known firm and asked them to j notify him when they had a nice safe ! on hand. In a few days Mr. Rockefeller received word that the firm had a I safe that they thought would suit him. j He made an appointment, and went . to see the safe the next day. The safe ' was a beauty, and Mr. Rockefeller appeared to be well pleased with it. "How much is it?" ho Inquired. "Two hundred and fifty dollars." Mr. Rockefeller thought a minute and then asked to see some other safes. He was shown through the building, and, after asking many questions as to prices, he bought one that cost $L'8. "How will we ship it, Mr. Rockefeller?" the clerk asked. "That depends. What will It cost lo sent! it to my liomo at Tarry town7 i "Fifteen dollars." Mr. Rockefeller again <11(1 some more thinking and then said: "Well, you may keep it here a few days. Our wagon wili be down shortly and I will have it call for the safe." HIS MEANING ALL RIGHT. Colored Preacher at Least Knew 1 What He Was Praying For. Caroline Abbot Stanley, in her new book, "Order No. 11," treating of the deplorable state of affairs in Missouri during the rebellion, when old friends became enemies and homes were burned and the country desolated, introduces "Uncle Reuben," an old darky preacher, who was coachman and general "Man Friday" for "Mahs* ter Trevllian" and the family. The bishop tells about being down at one of their meetings in Virginia once, and the old preacher, anxious to do bis best by them, prayed that God would send down liis "sanctum sanctorum" upon them. Next morning the bishop thought ho would get Uncle Reuben's idea of what he meant, and said: "Uncle, 1 was very much obliged to you for all the good things called down upon me last night, but I want to ask you just what you meant by His "sanctum sanctorum?" The old darky scratched his head a moment, and then said: "Well, master, I don' jes exae'ly know what dut word do mean, but I know what I meant by it.' "Well, what's that?" asked the bishop. "1 meant give 'em do bes' you got!" Our Large Physique. Interesting fac.s r the question of physical degeneracy have been furnished by the use in England of old tailor measurements for comparison. A firm In the North of England has compared the measurements for clothing made two generations ago with those of today; the result going to show that chest and hip measurements are now three inches 11 the average mora than they were sixty years ago. The same conclusion is reached by the experience of the readv made clothiers, who, it is said, nearly always lind that the presentday wearers of clothing require distinctly lnrpv-r ti'ioa .u-i ?v. xavo moii iut*ir ancestors. The London Telegraph thinks that these facts, whatever may be their generality, do not quite dispose of the question of degeneracy. They are what wo should expect from the more abundant and cheaper food cf the oeo pie. their hotter housing and Improved sanitary surroundings; but the testimony regarding the unfitness of recruits and progressive lack of stamina In towns, and especially manufacturing. populations cannot be disregarded. As ha3 recently been very properly emphasized, good air is the first necessity, more vital than even sufficiency and variety of food. From Inaccessible Position Culprit Defied English Law. For the past ten days the town of Newry, in Ireland, has been convulsed over the curious strategy by which a small contractor, named Jas. Gill, has defied the efforts of the police to enforce the penalty of a 40s. fine or a month's imprisonment, to which he had been sentenced for drunkenness. The man had recently undertaken the demolition of a factory chimney, round which the scaffolding necessary for the work had been erected, and ho sought security from the clutches of the authorities at the top of this structure, climbing by means of a short ladder, which he drew up after him as he reached each successive platform of the staging. Food and drink are furnished to him by his son, and raised to the summit of the chimney by an ingenious mechanical device. The other evening Clill managed to descend to the ground and roach his home unobserved, but. he returned to his lofty perch early on .Monday morning. Large crowds of people have flocked from all the country round to Sugar Island, where his hiding place is situated, and the police have now resigned themselves to waiting till the work of pulling down the chimney is completed before attempting to arrest him.?Reynold's Newspaper. ~ RIGHT TO BUILD DOVECOTS. Privilege Once Enjoyed Only by the Lords of the Manor. It is not universally known that the right of erecting a dovecot was a privilege only to be enjoyed in Eng > land by the lords of the manor, and I me law was vigorously enforced on this point. But in Scotland, accord ing to a statute still held in observance, nobody has a right to build a i cot in either town or country unless \ he is the owner of land yielding about ! 960 impericl bushels of produce per ! annum, and this property must be sit- j uatcd within at least two miles of j the dovecot, or pigeon house. A further enactment also states that on the above named conditions only one cot shall be built. A distinguished authority on bus- 1 bandry estimated that in 1628 there were 26,000 dovecots in England, and that allowing f?00 pairs to each house the damage wrought by birds in devouring corn would work out at no i less thnn lS.OOn.Ot'O bushels, that is, an allowance of four bushels yearly to i each pair. Any one who destroyed a cot was guilty of theft and is so held at the present lime in Scotland (the act was passed in 15791, while a third olTence of dovecot breaking was capitally punishable.?
