During the past week the price of
cotton has gone all to pieces, as a
farmer was heard to remark yesterday.
Two weeks ago farmers
would hoot at even 12 cents per
pound for the the staple, now 10
rents would he gladly accepted, j

range in a contrary maimer to the
farmers' welfare, and there aie v -ry

A "floating" gang of the Sothern
railway is busily engaged at present
laying a pipe line from the
tank near the depot to the big weil
recently sunk near the Millfort
mill. Heretofore water has been
furnished the company from the
reservoir of the Fort. Mill Mfg.
company, but the service was tin
satisfactory and the railroad people
will hereafter furnisu their own
water.
It gives but little trouble, yet results
in great profit, for fanners to
go into their corn fields after the

Mr. W. E. Spratt Dead.
Mr. Walter E. Spratt, whose
severe illiieMr has been noted in
The Times several Times recently,
died at his home west of town last
Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock.
Mr. Spratt had been in ill health
for tw ? years sutTcring from an affliction
of the kidneys, Six mouths
ago it was noticed that the disease

The treatment given him in the
hospital almost restored Ins mental
faculties, hut his health gradually
declined, and alter a short
while there he was brought to
his home here. The phyuieaus
who attended him say that death
was due to Addison's disease of
kidneys , a disease somewhat similar
to Bright's disease, ami that
the mind affliction is a strong
sympioui of the (lis case.
Mr. tSprait was 43 years of age,
and a descendant of Mr. Thos. C.
Spratt, one of the first white settlers
in this section and to whom
an extensive grant of land was given
by the then large tribe of Catawba
Indians.
Mr. Spratt married Miss Jennie
Belk. daughter of .M rs. Cynthia
Belk, and to ihein were born five
children, whom, with their mother
survive. Until he was stricken
