FORT MILL TIMES]
WEDNESDAY. APRIL 15, 1903.
IN THE LOCAL FIELD.
Facts Picked Up Here and There About
H^rt>eulngs Around Town.
Dr. J. H. Tliornwtll will preach
in the Presbyterian church next
2Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
The scarcity of local news in
The Times this issue is accounted
for by the fact that it "didn't happen."
Any Fort Mill boy desiring an
education at the I'nited States
Naval Academy hss an opportunity
to get it by attending the ex- \
Hiniuatiou at Vorkville on 12th of
May.
Now
approaches the season when
the mosquito, awaking from slumber
in mini puddle, marsh or cesspool,
begins to buzz and bile with
au appetite whetted by several
months of fasting.
The Yorkville Enquirer nays
that under decretal orders, tlie
clerk of court recently Hold the
Andrew Bailes laud in Fort Mill
township. The tract contained ,
1412 acres and was bought by E. \
W. Querry for ?">00.
The chicken thieves, it seems. !
have just been taking a little
vacation, or rest. Friday night
they were in town again, and paid
Capt. 8. E. White a visit. They j
-carried away 13 of the Captain's
finest. Mr. J. W. Ardrey was on
Friday night also the looser of ten
nice chickens.
A large crowd of witnesses left
Fort Mill Sunday evening and
Monday for Yorkville to attend '
the trial of the State vs. E. 1*. 11. |
Nivens, It. G. .lohnson and A. 13. j
Parks. A telephone message yes- !
terday afternoon stated that the ,
case would not come up for trial
before Friday. ,
The fifth nnnual commencement
of the Gold Hill school began last
evening and will continue till Friday
night, when the exercises will
close with a concert and masquerade
party. O. 13. Martin, superintendent
of education, will visit the
school Friday evening and deliver
an ?ddress.
Mr. A. H. Merritt, of Gold Hill,
who keeps a record of the weather,
informed The Times man on Tuesday
that since Christmas there has !
been 60 cloudy and 30 clear days.
Mr. Merritt says that the ground
has not been in tirst-clnss shape '
lor plowing since lust November.
Mr. W. H. Windie, of Gold Hill, j i
has been named by Governor Hey- 1
ward as one of the committee 10
represent York county at the Inter-State
Cane Grower's Conven | '
tion, t<? be neld at Macon, (in., on I 1
May 6, 7 and 8. Mr. O. \V. Potts, <
of Pleasant Valley, will go as a I
delegate from Lancaster county. '
Now, that the cotton planting
season is at hand, the farmers:'
should not be deluded into plant - '
itig a big crop of cotton on account I
of the high price at the expense of <
a full corn crop. A good rule to
follow in this section at all times, '
it matters not what the price of
cotton may be, is to plant a sufli- <
cient amount of corn to keep the '
corn crip full on the farm and then <
grow all the cotton you can. 1
Capt. T. B. Sprutt, of the Fort '
Mill Light Infantry has decided
to hold twice-a-week practice drills 1
of his company for the next few v
weeks. The drills will be held on '
Tuesday nights and Saturdays. On j4
next Saturday, however, tlie company
will assemble for target practice
and it in likely that a number *of
prizes will be awarded to those '
who can come nearest the '"bull's *
eye." Let all the members attend, f
News reached Fort Mill Wed- '
nesday of the burning tit an early (
hour that morning of the barn of
Mr. Geo. Ross, a farmer who lives
near Pleasant Valley, in Lauras- 1
tercounty. In the barn at the v
time of the tire was a horse, a lot "
of corn, fodder and roughue.-e, and "
about 15 sacks of guano, all of '
which was lost. Mr. Ross estimates
his loss at. $(.KX), with no in- |
surance. Tracks to anil from the '
barn indicated that the lire was 1
the work of an incendiary, though
no clue has thus far been discovered
as to the perpetrator of the '
crime.
