The small grain crops are looking

The woods are very pretty now
with the trees and flowers in bloom.
Mr. J. 15. Mills spent Thursday
evening in Charlotte on business.
Some are fearing that the cold
weather bus uot bid us a final adieu

Messrs. Frank Kiuibrell and
Nile Carothe s went to liock Hill
Monday on business.
Mrs. J. C Hughes and Miss
M iss Maud Thompson spent yesterday
in Bock Hill.
The farmers are enjoying ? another
week's leisure, on account of
the rains of Huuday au Monday.
A few straw hats have made
their appearance. They look as if
they had been palled out of season.
The farmers nro somewhat despondent
on account of the unfavorable
weather retarding farm
work.
The weather has taken a decided
change, turning from warm to
cold, and fires arc again comfortable.
Mr. T. M. Kmythe, ofGastouia,
N. C., spent Monday at the home

relatives in Hock Hill.

of Hock Hill, spent Sunday
with Miss Annie Clawsou.
Lime is cheap and if free y used
around the premises it may save
the suffering, anxiety and expenses
of a prolonged case cf sickness.
Miss Nannie Pearson, a charming
young lady of Morganton, N.
C., is spending ? few Hays with
the Misses Thorn well at this place.
The Hessian tiy is reported to be
playing the wild with oats in some
sections of the State. As yet we
have heard no damage being
done in this county.

As it is currently reported that
several dops in town were bitten
by a mad dop |a few nights since,
the town council earnestly requests
all persons owning dope, to keep
them confined for a short time.
We have not heard from some of
our correspondents in a pood while.
We would be more than pleased
if they would remember us occagionly
and pive us the news from
their respective neighborhoods.
Mr. W. E. Wliiteeell and family
have arrived and are residing in
the Whitesell house on White
street. Aa previously stated, Mr.
Whitesell will engage in the mercantile
business near 'the upper
mill.
Dr. T. B. Meacham on Saturday
received the sad information of
the sudden death in New York
Friday of his nephew. Mr. Banks
Meacham. He was 35 years old
and a son of the late Banks Meacham,
of Chester.

Dr. J. H. Thornwell has been
in Charlotte during the past week
conducting a series of meetings at
Westminister Presbyterian church
The Observer says that the series
of sermons he has been pr? aching
at this church have deservedly
attiacted a great deal of attention

Our young and enterprising contractor,
Mr. A. A. Bradford, Jr., i
has leased the plant of the Sprat t I
Machine Company, in Sprattville. ^
Mr. Bradford has a record for
prompt and excellent work, and
his acquiring the Spratt construction
shop will only tend to enable

that a mad dog had appeared at
the home of Mr. F. Nuns and was
headed this way. The report however,

dogs were bitten by the mud canine
before it was finally killed.
Rev. W. A. Wright on last Sat- C
urday received from Branch ville 1
the stuffed hide of a full grown
lynx, it measuring about if feet
long and IS inches high. This animal
inhabits the swamps and is Jvery
srewd, scarcely ever venturing
into the trap. Mr. Wright says Jl
that an old colored man at Branehville
has been endeavaring for two
years to trap the lynx, and succeeded
only recently.
Rev. R. A. Yongue, of Springfield,
arrived Thursday and remained
with friends in this place
until Monday. On Sunday ltev.
Yongue preached an eloquent seririon
