Children of the West. j
The children of the frontier to-day
live a much more civilized life than
formerly, hut still raoro rough tiian
ilie city-bred child can fancy. In
many of the small towns of the southwest
frontier the whites and the In* j
dians are on friendly terms, and |
schools have been established, yet
miniature wars are often on between
the youngsiera which lteep the village
police busy. These battles are usually
the outcomo of games, which are
rough and wild, writes the Pctroit
News-Tribune. Tocy-riding races and
races of all kinds are leading feat
urcs for the boys, while the girls play j
marbles ar.d similar games witu i
them. Picnics are overy-week events
during the summer. The hoys are
taught to swim at six or seven years j
of age. and they spend a good portion '
of their time on the creek and river j
banks during vacation.
But the children as they are growing
up are infused with the spirit of
the frontier. They are taught unknowingly
how to "hustle," and It
seems a part of their nature to bo J
brave and honest. Tho boys either
go Into business or farming, few of
them ever going East or entering the
