came to town bringing several
hundred dollars in gold, which lie
had received in payment of a place
he had sold in North Cnrolina, says
the Lancaster Ledger, paring
the day he had a settlement for the
cotton sold on this market this
season and in all had something
over $(?00, in cash, a portion of
which he was going to use in payment
for a place recently purchased
in this county, He spent Monday
night with his old friend, Mr. I).

Mrs. Elliott is a widoto and lives
with her only son. a boy in tho

he had friends with him and if the
boy showed himself out of his room
he would be killed. The negro
broke down the door with an axe.
Mrs. Elliott had no weapon. The
man declared that he would kill
both mother and son if any resistance
was made. Before the woman
was forced to decide between her

Kendrick. His mother threw herself

with the man with pistol in hand.
Mrs. Elliott pressed the negro's
pistol arm to his side. In ttie
struggle all fell to the floor, and
in exerting himself to hurl Mrp.
Elliott from him the negro let his
pistol drop. The woman seized
thg weapon and ^fired. Kendrick
ditd almost instantly.
