MAY 21. 1902.
A newspaper correspondent up
in North Carolina, noting the fact
that work is shortly to begin on
the new double truck of the Southern
between Lynchburg and Charlotte,
rnukes the point that the
tobacco crop will be short next
season because farmers cannot depend
on their negro help to remain
on the farms when tho call comes
for railroud hands.
Titus Glenn, the negro prencher
who was sent up from ltock Hill
some time ago for burglary, escaped
from the chningang last
Monday evening about sundown.
He had a half hour's start before
he was missed. The bloodhounds
chased him beautifnlly for three
miles, when they caught him, and
according to Supervisor Gordon,
"bit him sufficiently," although
that was nothing like what he got
that night with n strap.
The attendance at the Charleston
exposition up to this timo is
estimated at 500,000 and the prospects
are that the attendance will
reaeh the 600,000 notch before the
close of the show, which is a little
more than half the number figured
by the officials of the exposition
just prior to the opening of the
big show. At that timo it was
thought that the attendance for
the ontire period of the fair would
reach 1,000,000 paid admissions.
The volcano that wrought so
much havoc on the 8th of this
month on the island of Martinique
is within the urea that was 60
greatly disturbed by the celebrated
earthquake that destroyed
the city of Lisbon, Portugal, in
1775, and that of the destructive
earthquake that occurred in 1812
in the northern part of {South
America and destroyed the cily of
Curacus, Venezuela, with 12,000
people. These cities are now
much safer for many years to
come than if Mont Pelee had not
behaved so badly. She opened
her crater and let out the pent-up
force that was a constant menace
to that area.
Ice Cream Oil.
The farmer who 6ells his cotton
seed to the oil mill, pockets the
money, and turns the coiner to a
hnndy ice cream saloon, where he
may cool and soothe his inner man,
little thinks that the commodity
he has just unloaded from his
wagon has in it the crude elements
of the popular disli he purchases.
But it in nono the less true. We
are no longer dependent on "Old
Sia Cow" for our creniu. and when
she goes on strike, upsets the
bucket and flees to the further
pasture, we simply turn us to the
can of salad oil and get all the fats
needed to make our creaui. And
thnt. without a single microbe
to trouble us. This may sound a
little wild to the "horny handed,"
but if he will watch the pretty girl
who demonstrates at the Western
exhibit in Charleston, he may see
the whole process, utul if ho is
good, may eat some of the ereatn.
The cow is no longer 'it" when
ico cream is concerned.

Congress Helps Martinique Sufferers.
Congress has established n precedent
in appropriating $200,000
for tiie relief of the sufferers in
1 lie Martinique disaster. This is
the first time in American history
that a direct appropriation has
been made to foreign people. Congress
has on several of her occasions
such as the Irish famine in 1817
and 1880, and the famine in India
ill 1997, taken steps to relieve distress
with other countries, such as
authorizing the navy department
nient to lend vessels to carry food
and clothing, but never before has
it appropriated money for the purchase
of suppl es.

the Ebanezer cemetery, the funeral
services being conducted by
Rev. W. E. 'Thayer, of the Baptist
church, of which she has l)een a
member for more than three-quarters
of a century.
The deceased was a daughter of
Dr. Hemphill, of this county. She
was born in Ebenezer either in
the year 1800 or J801, and lived in
that township all the years of her
long life. She was twice married.
Her first husband wus Dempsey
Gauldin, and after his death she
married George Sturgis. She had
several children, and her descendants
have multiplied so that at the
time of her death she had numerous
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was a woman of
intelligence, with a remarkable
memory of people that lived and
incidents that occurred in the long
ago She possessed a rich store of i
local history, but unfortunately it
has gone down into the grave with
her. Her death removes the oldest
landmark in all this section.

Want a New County.
Some of the citizens of linrnwell
and Hampton counties desire to
establish a new county to be known
as Allendale, with the county seat
at the town of Allendale. The petition
was filed with the governor
a few days ngo and as soon as he
looks over it. an election will be
ordered, provided the petition is
presented under the constitutional
requirements.
Allendale is on the Port Royal
and Southern rond and is a thriving
little town of 1,500 inhabitants.
In order for a new county
to bo established it is necessary
that the area should he not less
than 400 square miles and that in
that orea there shall be 124th part
of the t>omi lotion of the State and
that the taxable property shall be
as much as $1,500,000. The boundary
line shall not run within eighO
miles of any other court house.
The petition is presented by the
qualified electors of the district
and is said to be quite numerously
signed.
Cost of Rearing Boys.
Someone has figured that the
average boy who is dependent upon
his parents for a livelihood until
he reaches the age of 21, costs
$4,000. The question naturally
arises, does it pay to raise boys;
are there not other crops that
would prove more profitable? If
a boy turns out to be a cigarette
fiend, it is safe to say that tho parent
might have iuvested his money
to a much better advuntage.
But if the boy grows to manhood
with the lesson well lenrned that
wealth and success grow on bushes
that are watered with the sweat of
one's brow, the parents need not
begrudge whatever they have spent
upon him, for he will be a source
of increasing joy and tin' pride of
their henrts, and when they grow
old and their hands tremble and (
their steps are faltering, they will !
have strong arms to lean upon and
help them over all rough places
that lie in that twilight path of
theirs.
Columbia to Have a Boat Line.
The establishment of a line of
steamers on the Conga ree river to
ply between the cities of Columbia
and Georgetown is assured beyond
peradventure and those at the head
of the enterprise expect to have
the line in full operation within
thirty or sixty days. The steam
era that are to make twice a week
trips from Columbia to Georgetown
connecting with the Clyde
line ocean going steamers for New
York are already at Georgetown
waiting orders to begin their trips, j
They will have a tonnage of from

A well known insurance company
has hit upon a new scheme
to solicit business in Columbia. A
