THE "DRUIDESS RING" RAGE.
ParUUn Ladles of Fsibloa Take Cp
Another Fad.
Another new trinket is one to which
the extraordinary name of the "Druidess
ring" has been given. Mistletoe is
all the rage this Christmas in Paris.
The ring in question is accordingly
made of two leaves of the plant imitated
in silver nr nnl? It chnnlil
be explained tnat the mistletoe and
Yuletldc are not linked together by an
ancient association of ideas in the.
Parlcian inind. On the contrary, llorists
and jewelers have "rediscovered"
this year the sacred "gill de chcne" of
the old Gauls and Britons. Hence it
is not absurd to talk in Paris of mistletoe
having become "fashionable."
One authority states that "in the case
of engaged couples, the bunch of mistletoe
presented to the girl by her
fiance should invariably bo attached
with a white satin ilbbon." Perhaps
it ought to bo further explained that
the connection between the ancient
plant and kissing is anothir association
of ideas unknown to the Parisian ]
mind, which, indeed, would be shocked 1
at the thought. The Druidess ring is
the jewelers' contribution to the prevailing
mistletoe fashion. It is not a
mere ornament, hut is supposed to he
useful. From the ring, which is largo
enough to bo easily slipped over the
gloved finger, hang chains, to which
are attached pencil, mirror, powder
puff, etc., and the innumerable similar
trinkets which are so indispensable to
the modern woman.

FIGHT OVER A GIRL WAIF
Paternity of Survivor of 'The Wind j
of Death" in Court.
Chll<l ItpHrurd From Flood* lu 1 St>?
Claimed t>y a New Orleans Man on
KtreiiRtli of a llc?einUl"''pe.
New Orleans. La.?Proceedings begun
In the Police Court, to he followed by
a suit in the Civil Court, liriug to light
a romance connected with the great
Oheniere Cumimula storm of September,
181)3. The storm, called "The
Wind of Death," in Louisiana swept
over the Gulf Cons: in Louisiaua nearly
nine years ago, being, with the single
exception of the Galveston storm of
two years ago, the worst and most
destructive ever known in tiiis region.
Among the sufferers was Louis Terrebonne.
whose wife and four children
were reported drowned, lie escaped.
In IS'.)!) it was reported to white citizens
of St. Bernard parish that a Filipino
fisherman named Antonio, living
in a solitary palmetto hut in the Lake
Borgne Swamp, hud a little white girl
eight years old with him. It was fell
that she should be rescued from her
surroundings , and placed in better
hands. A party of white men visited
Antonio and demanded the surrender
of the girl. The Filipino unwillingly
surrendered her.
Antonio explained how he got the little
girl. In September, 181)3, he was
a lishcrman in Barataria Bay, near
'hen lore Caniinada. 11 is shack was destroyed
by the tornado, but he himself
escaped unhurt. The next day, when
the tidal wave hail subsided somewhat.
a [jioce of roof lloated in where he hail
sought refuge with a two-year-old
child, only partly clad, asleep on it.
The child was evidently one of the
few who hail escaped from the doomed
settlement. Regarding her as sent by
God V* his care, he adopted the little |
girl, Whom he called Antonia. She lived ;
with biui six years and when he moved
to the Lake Rorgne tishing grounds she !
went with him.
Antonia was taken from her adopted j
father crying, ami turned over to j
the Society for the Prevention of Cm- ;
elty to Children and sent by them to
their suburban house at Reauvior, Jefferson
Davis's old home. A year ago
Mrs. Arthur Lee, a well-to-do woman
of Plaquetnine, La., visited lteauvior.
She was attracted by a pretty little
girl of ten. She expressed a desire to
adopt her, and the society, finding that
the child would be well cared for, consented.
So Antonia became Victoria
Iam>, and moved to Pluquemine.
Mrs. Lee and Victoria came to New
Orleans some time ago. An old negress,
a family servant of Terrebonne's, saw
Victoria the other day. She ran at
once to her former master, Terrebonne,
who has never recovered from the loss
of his entire family, and told him that
she was satistied that Victoria Lee
was Marie Terrebonne, the baby sui>posed
to be lost in the great storm, and
whom she herself had nursed, us the
resemblance of the child to the Terrebonne
family was so striking no one
could iloubt it. Terrebonne saw the
child and was also convinced.
The police were notitied and tlie case i
Came before the Police CViium in >
over the possession of the child. There
Is no direct evidence as to the Identity '
of the child, 110 ornament, clothing or
anything else that would prove she is
Marie Terrebonne. The only evidence,
even, that the child came front Chenlere
Cnntinada. is the testimony of a
Filipino fisherman, who has since disappeared.
The claim of the father is supported
only on the remarkable family resenihlumv,
which cannot he disputed; hut,
on the <> iter hand, there were more
than a hundred Terrebonnes, relatives
of the claimant, drowned at Chettleve
Cnmiunda. Mrs. Lee is fighting Terrebonne's
claim vigorously, being unwilling
to surrender her adopted daughter,
and as the little girl is unwilling to
leave on this slight evidence, it is left
to the courts to decide her paternity.
